The discovery of fossils from 12 ancient bird species and 4 frog species has opened a rare window into how New Zealand looked about 1 million years ago. It indicates that New Zealand’s ancient wildlife was significantly impacted by catastrophic climate changes and volcanic eruptions. This resulted in frequent extinctions and species replacements well before human arrival.

Of the 30 or so kaumātua who attended the weekly social and cultural events of the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust, Stan Simmons was by far the best dancer.

He was "the first on the dance floor to grab the ladies" at the annual Matariki dance, "he was the only gentleman capable of taking a lady around the whole room".

Stan was a quiet man, a humble man, one of faith and industry, if with a highly competitive streak when it came to sports and games.

It might have been headlined by the grand old grandparents of punk rock, but there were plenty of granddaughters and grandsons in the crowd for this year's iteration of the Greenstone Summer Concert at the Taupō Amphitheatre.

The cross-generational appeal of Iggy Pop and Joan Jett was underscored by a big contingent of teenagers deliriously pogo-ing away, as old grey-heads standing next to them sagely nodded their noggins in time to the music.
