Taupō hapū to restore public access to popular lakeside reserve
A Taupō hapu has agreed to restore full public access, and even enlarge the size of a popular lakeside campground, at Motutere on State Highway 1.
After a long and drawn out consultation process, with 921 pages of submissions, involving Ngāti Tuwharetoa hapū Ngāti Te Rangiita ki Waitetoko, Taupō District Council, the general public, and the Australian-based leaseholder and owner of Motutere Bay Holiday Park, councillors voted to approve a new management plan for the Motutere Recreation Reserve.
From rugged campsite to 7.5ha resort
Grant Kilby has always loved camping. His mum was director of health at the YMCA, and he would attend YMCA camps in the school holidays. “I think it was mandatory that I was there,” he jokes.
He went on camping holidays with his parents, and later, took his own kids.
“Camping’s been in my blood.”
