My wife, Horiana Henderson, is running in the by-election. We have lived in the Hamilton East Ward for more than 30 years so she is very aware of issues relating to our neighbourhood (e.g. Council proposing to close the Brooklyn Road leg of 5 Crossroads and increasing rates by 8.9% with compounding 4.9% increases in the following 2 years while at the same time planning to spend $34 million on the Cook Street cycleway at a cost of $12.5 million per kilometre). Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
