Almost the entire town of Whangamatā will be off limits for alcohol during the annual Beach Hop event as the council seeks to kick alcohol-related crime to the kerb.
Beach Hop organisers say they fully support the ban, and said “unsupervised, under age kids” still roamed the streets during their festival and parents needed to keep a much closer eye on them.

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
