Some of us also crochet squares or strips and some ladies sew up the blankets and others crochet round the edges. We have been very grateful for the help we have received from Neighbourly folks. Last week we shipped 113 blankets, many hats (beanies), scarves and jumpers and we are now starting again to make things for the next shipment. We are always needing more wool and material scraps to make the blankets etc. If you have any wool/acrylic or material spare that you would like to donate, we would be very grateful for your contribution. Please ring or text me on 021-057-0371 and I will arrange to collect the items or to tell you more about what we do. Many thanks.

Andrew Ramsey. HarperCollins, 2019

Hardback with dust jacket, 384 pages. Excellent condition

Before the Manhattan Project, before nuclear warfare and the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was the twentieth century's great scientific quest to fathom the secrets of the atom. It was through that search for the inner workings of matter that a unique friendship was forged, a partnership that defied academic orthodoxy and altered the course of history. The Basis of Everything is the story of the coming of the atomic bomb, and how the unlikely union of two scientists - Ernest Rutherford, the son of a New Zealand farmer, and Mark Oliphant, a peace-loving vegetarian from a tiny Australian hills village - would change the world.

The Real Band Of Brothers
: First-hand accounts from the last British survivors of the Spanish Civil War

by Max Arthur. Hardback, 304 pages.

2009. Excellent condition

The Spanish Civil War, which raged from 1936-9, was a brutal and intense war which claimed well over 500,000 lives. Rightly predicting that the rise of Fascism in Spain could develop into a more global conflict, almost 2500 British volunteers travelled to Spain under the banner of the International Brigade to fight for the Spanish Republic in an attempt to stem the tide. Acclaimed oral historian Max Arthur has tracked down the eight survivors of this conflict, and interviewed them for their unique perspective, their memories of their time fighting and the motives which compelled them to fight. Theirs is a unique story, of men and women volunteering to lay down their lives for a cause, believing passionately that the Spanish Republic's fight was their fight too.

It is the story of twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch-"Scout" (the child heroine of Mockingbird) who returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political termoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town and the people close to her.
