The Council has just published its Annual Report and Summary online after adopting the Annual Report on 3 October, shortly before the local body elections.

We’ve set rates and debt levels that balance affordability with the need to provide for our growing community.

Average rates are within Government affordability measures at $2,596 per rateable property, and average debt per rateable property is $2,012.

This is 65 per cent below our current debt servicing limit and leaves a generous capacity for funding services and facilities needed to meet future growth.

A rising number of building consents for new dwellings show Waikato is currently the third-fastest growing district in the country after Selwyn (in Canterbury) and Queenstown, and the Council is seeking new ways to maintain and build the infrastructure the district needs to support an expected population of more than 26 per cent over the next 15 years (from about 69,900 this year to 88,200 in 2031).

The Council’s new roading ‘Alliance’ with Downer NZ is improving efficiencies and customer responsiveness to meet the district’s roading and footpath maintenance needs, ahead of the development of the new Waikato Expressway that – when completed - will mean nearly 100 kilometres of ex-State Highway will be added to the local roading network.

A draft agreement to form a water and waste-water Council-controlled organisation (CCO) with Hamilton City and Waipa District Councils is expected to provide financial savings and other benefits.

We’ve attracted new local businesses and employment to support economically sustainable growth. We’ve introduced new refuse and recycling systems to minimise landfill waste, and we’ve identified significant natural areas and habitats to protect our environment.

We’re working hard to ensure we build our communities as our townships grow,.

We’ve undertaken initiatives to bring people together, from Youth Awards to ‘placemaking’ projects that will help revitalise the public spaces in our towns. We also committed more than $1.2m in grants to nearly 200 community groups throughout the district to enable our communities to come together to meet some of their own needs.

This is our only fundraiser for the year, the malls pay for all resources, and all donations come directly to help us support 320 other charities in our region. Gift wrapping shifts are 4 hours long, and you need to be available for at least three during the month. It's tonnes of fun, you can bring a friend/family member, and training is provided. Hamilton is in a prime location for tourists passing through from Auckland to Rotorua and Taupo/Ruapehu - many stop at the Hamilton gardens but besides that there isn't much other reason for them to stay around Hamilton [compared to places like Rotorua and the south island], most of them simply pass through. The idea I have could start small and grow from there - or with the right backing could be done once properly and start big and provide a lot of jobs and income for Hamilton - our slice of the tourist industry which is constantly growing and brings people from overseas wanting to spend their money on something interesting. It could include motels nearby for people to stay longer plus a restaurant and all the associated side-businesses that go with tourist attractions [children's play areas, fitness park etc.]. Maybe even a campground thereby providing something for bored campers to do. Part of the project would cater to the movie industry. Most of it would be linked with camera monitors [with permission from participants] to screens in the restaurant providing interesting entertainment for those who don't want to participate but just want something to do for the day.
It will also be educational and provide a learning experience for those in various aspects of photography, from the average person interested in knowing a little more to working professionals [yes, many of them still have things to learn :) ] It could also be used as a wedding venue or for other functions as it would include themed rooms, medieval, Victorian, etc. as well as a room for high speed photography, a large tank for underwater photoshoots from the side without getting your gear wet, various structures for interesting perspective photos, green screen rooms, places for people to display their work etc. etc.
I couldn't do this [financially] on my own and wouldn't mind sharing all the plans and ideas with someone prepared to take on a project[investment] like this.
People are always looking for something interesting and new to do, who wants to join in on the project?
