Hamilton Community Market in collaboration with Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is excited to bring this opportunity to Hamilton West on Sunday 4th September 2022 from 9am - 1pm at our market. This will be combined with our market, so will be a goodie not to miss.

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is an experiential programme in which secondary school students set up and run their own business.

Our vision at Young Enterprise is to inspire the next generation of business leaders, disruptors, and changemakers, helping to create a generation of business savvy and financially competent Kiwis. In this authentic learning experience, students develop a whole new set of skills: problem solving, resilience, teamwork, leadership, public speaking, and decision-making.

YES companies complete challenges throughout the year in their quest to become regional champion and compete at nationals in December. There are both regional and national awards, cash prizes and tertiary scholarships up for grabs throughout the year.

The YES Trade Fair is an opportunity for students to sell their product or service and promote their business to the public (they are also competing for the “Best Trade Fair Presence” award!)

If you’re looking for a way to support your community and the next generation of bright, young entrepreneurs – then make sure you come on down to the Hamilton Community Market on September 4th!

'With $30 million, a major affordable housing initiative for the Waikato can begin, a community foundation says.

Momentum Waikato is pitching to potential funders – including Waikato Regional Council – and says the homes would both help families and support economic growth.

“We think we can start with $30 million,” said Kelvyn Eglinton, the chief executive of Hamilton-based Momentum Waikato.

Affordable housing sits in between “social housing” – for the likes of the homeless and those needing emergency accommodation – and market-supplied housing.

Eglinton’s comments in an interview Friday were made the day after Momentum’s presentation to Waikato Regional Council, seeking a $10 million contribution to a proposed Community Impact Fund for affordable housing development.

The Benefits of Linen

Linen is most loved for its diversity, from a rustic and neutral look to soft and refined. It is often found in homes on upholstered and loose covered furniture, curtains, cushions, bedding and clothing. But did you know the benefits of linen run right down to the fibres?

How is Linen made?
Linen is an amazing natural fabric made from flax fibres and this process has been used to make linen for almost 6,000 years.

The plants are first removed from the ground by cutting or pulling and then the seeds are extracted though a process called winnowing or ripping. To separate the fibres from the flax plant itself, a natural process takes place called “retting” that utilizes bacteria to decompose the pectin that binds the fibre together.

Once the long fibres are removed they are brushed out into long strands that can then be spun into yarn and eventually woven into linen material.

The best part about this process is that it’s practically zero-waste. Anything that will not be used in the fabric manufacturing, such as the woody stalks of the flax plant and the roots, compost back into the soil and the seeds used to make linseed oil.

Benefits of Linen
Linen is Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly: Linen is a sustainable, natural fibre growing without the use of pesticides, fertilizers and additional watering. This also makes it a renewable resource, plus being a natural fibre it’s also biodegradable.

Producing linen has a smaller environmental impact than cotton, mainly as it needs little to no water consumption to grow. Also, as mentioned above, the production of linen is rarely wasteful.
