How to Make Your Towels Feel New Again

Robert Anderson from Curtain Clean Hamilton

One of the best things about staying with my parents is the promise of soft, fluffy towels when I arrive. Compared to the rough, frequently damp variety I have at home, my mum’s towels feel like I'm being wrapped in clouds. When I ask her how she keeps her towels so fluffy, she replies, only half-joking, “I buy expensive towels.”

First, I read that the leading cause of stiff towels is often leftover detergent residue. However, while cutting back on detergent will prevent towels from growing scratchy, it may not revive the softness. Choosing a hot water cycle and washing loads of only towels are also recommended for maintaining fluff, but again may not be enough to bring it back from the dead.

Undeterred, I continued to scrounge around the internet, and eventually came across a few interesting tricks—using items that I already have lying around at home—that I decided to try. Not at all of them worked out, but here is what I discovered.

Add Baking Soda
What the internet says: Mix half a cup of baking soda along with a normal detergent dose for fluffier and cleaner towels. Baking soda also naturally eliminates musty and mildew smells that come from towels remaining damp for too long.
How it worked: The towel felt thicker and bouncier, but the threads were sharper and spikier—kind of like a buzz cut texture. Not entirely ideal.

Throw Tennis Balls in The Dryer
What the internet says: If you have a few clean, unused tennis balls lying around like I do, try throwing them in the dryer along with your towels. As the balls bounce around, they help remove lumps and increase softness.
How it worked: It didn’t. I noticed no difference in fluffiness from drying towels with tennis balls. My towels remained their same old scruffy selves.

Brush It Out
What the internet says: Use a hairbrush to brush your towel once it’s clean and dry, which will help break down any dried detergent residue and separate the threads from each other, making the towel softer to the touch.

Cash: The Autobiography (Johnny Cash)
Patrick Carr

1997

Paperback, 309 pages

Tiny dog-ear on cover otherwise excellent condition

Cash reflects on The extraordinary life and musical career of Johnny Cash. He is the only entertainer in history in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame -- a distinction befitting a man who sang with Elvis Presley in the 1950s and with U2 in 1995.

From his wild years of addiction to his loving faith in Christ, Johnny Cash embodies contradiction -- and it is that universal inner struggle, communicated with candor and simple wisdom, that has endeared him to audiences from all realms of experience.

Traditional Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years and has paved the way for new treatments and preventative measures. It is built around 5 seasons: spring, early summer, late summer, autumn and winter and as each season arrives, the health focus shifts.
In Autumn, traditional Chinese medicine focuses on the lungs and large intestines. Our lungs are responsible for taking in oxygen, and absorbing it into our blood while simultaneously expelling carbon dioxide. The large intestines are responsible for absorbing vitamins and nutrients. They both have the purpose of absorbing vital compounds that we need to survive.
When you put this into a modern medical context, it makes sense. Winter brings seasonal pathogens and cold weather. Improving our lung function helps us to fight pathogens, and improving our intestines helps us build nutritive reserves, all boosting our immunity to get through the winter.
There is something comforting and logical about respecting the past as we move into future seasons.
At Naturally Healthy we have a great range of products to help boost your immunity, support your lungs and nurture your intestines. One of these products is EXhale Immunity and Lung Health, and this coincidently has a Chinese name - Aihule 爱呼乐 . Check them out as we prepare for the winter months ahead ❄️

I didn't know what was wrong with me
Right from a young child I have always loved food; I loved gatherings because of the food. As I got older I would steal food and money to buy food. My life was all about food and if I wasn’t eating, I was thinking about eating and food.

I was very athletic at school and not terribly worried about my weight at that time. It was when I went into high school and the “beach girls” came to our high school that I started looking at the differences. They were brown, thin and seemed to be very popular with the boys. I watched them and what they ate. I started eating what they were eating at school, but would eat as much as possible at home.

I tried to fit in, but wasn’t able to make friends easily. I was obsessed about my weight and food by now and it drove me to exercise and diets. I went on my first diet when I was sixteen years old, I took herbal diet tablets, exercised like a person obsessed and I drank alcohol, smoked cigarettes and drank black coffee to control my weight. I lost five stone and got a lot of compliments about how I looked, but that didn’t stop the self-loathing and madness in my head. It didn’t matter how much weight I lost or how thin I was, I was obsessed about my body, how fat I was and how thin I wanted to be. My self-obsession and food controlled my life, and it was to get much worse as I got older.
