'Pillar of the community': Unofficial mayor of Canterbury town dies of bowel cancer

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

If there was something that needed to be done in the small Canterbury town of Hororata, there was a good chance Roger Parsons would be involved.

The former fire chief, farmer and community stalwart, who was named the town’s “official unofficial mayor” last year, died of bowel cancer in the only home he has ever lived in on January 27, aged 66.

Parsons was a highly regarded and respected figure around Hororata, the mid-Canterbury town home to about 400 people. Read more about Roger www.stuff.co.nz... |here. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at the Hororata Domain at 1.30pm on Friday.
