Moves to reinstate a wooden groyne at Dunedin’s St Clair Beach are making waves.

The Dunedin City Council will discuss a proposal to reinstate the beach’s timber groyne, which had been used with varied success since 1902.

A groyne is a series of poles embedded in the sand and built out from the beach, which affects how the sand moves.

Retaining sand at the beach is becoming increasingly important as large waves have stripped sand and exposed man-made ‘sand sausages’ at the foot of dunes, which form part of the low-lying area’s coastal defences.

Here's a wee bit of a throwback to life under lockdown. Check out how this couple in Motueka helped out their neighbours who were new to the area. Have you got an unsung hero in your neighbourhood? You can make your nominations here!

"We have a lovely young couple across the road from us at number 13, Glenaven Drive, called Kirsty and Jeremy. We have recently moved to Motueka and they have been very helpful and friendly right from the start. During Lockdown they did shopping for us and let us have soil from their excavations for our garden improvements. Later on, they have given us lemons, gave spare concrete when they had some delivered for themselves and watered our plants when we were able to go away and visit our new grandchild. They are gems and have made us really happy that we've chosen Motueka as our home."

A trucking company has been fined after one of its tankers leaked a large volume of animal blood on Dunedin’s Townleys Rd, near Kaikorai Valley Rd, on June 19. It is understood thousands of litres was spilled on the road, with some going into the nearby Kaikorai Stream.

Otago Regional Council regulatory general manager Richard Saunders said the large spill prompted an investigation by staff.

That led to the trucking company being issued with an infringement notice for making an unpermitted discharge into a waterway, he said.
