A hearing into an oil giant seeking to discharge harmful substances off New Zealand's southern coast has resulted in a walkout from a submitter.

Kathryn Nevell urged those in the oil and gas industry to think about the "karma" of being involved in their industry, which was not sustainable.

"You don't have to be a scientist to know that we are taking too much from the earth."

A question raised by Nevell whether gas was recognised as a mineral was later clarified by an OMV representative, sparking Nevell to respond from the floor.

Hearing chairman, Mark Farnsworth, told Nevell she was not allowed to ask a question from the floor, prompting her to walk out of the building.

Lengthy delays for patients needing a colonoscopy, a state of inter-service warfare, and stressed clinicians in need of trauma counselling.

These are among the issues detailed in a damning external audit of colonoscopy services and bowel cancer treatment times at the Southern District Health Board (SDHB). The SDHB commissioned the audit following years of complaints.

Authored by Christchurch physician Dr Phil Bagshaw and Dr Steven Ding, the audit found serious problems controlling bowel cancer and dysfunctional relationships between clinicians – an issue known to but unable to be resolved by senior management.

It's true that you agreed to a legally binding contract as soon as you drove into the parking lot. Thankfully, New Zealand law protects consumers from the exploitative clauses that corporates love to slip in the fine print.

Under contract law, parking companies can only claim for "the actual and reasonable costs they incurred". Charging $65 for a short overstay in an empty carpark is as far from reasonable as you can get.
