Kia kaha Canterbury! Have you got any messages of support?

February 22 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquakes.

With uncertainties surrounding commemorations due to recent Covid-19 restrictions, the Christchurch City Council will live stream the event so that people worldwide will have to opportunity to pay their respects.

The council has worked closely with the Quakes Families Trust to create a memorial service that will acknowledge and commemorate those that lost their lives and all that have endured hardship due to the disaster.

“We want people, no matter where they are in the world, to feel part of the commemorations so we will be live-streaming both the national memorial service on 22 February and the free concert – Ōtautahi Together – on 28 February,” says Christchurch City Council Civic and International Relations Manager Matt Nichols.

185 Cantabrians lost their lives when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at a depth of 5km near south-east Christchurch in 2011.

Share your messages of support below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the Northern Outlook.

Qigong
Qigong is an ancient Chinese holistic therapy. It is the foundation to Tai Chi, but relatively simpler than Tai Chi.

“After practicing Zhineng Qigong, my cancer disappeared. In the practice, I feel protected, joyful, safe and more energy. Healing comes naturally when we get out of the way and go beyond our attachments. Our new life is starting Now!”
~ Luise Kohl-Hajek, Germany

“The gentle movements stretch every muscle in my body although they look very simple. My muscles feel stronger, and I am mentally stronger too. While practicing, I feel the sense of “unity with the universe.””
~ Susan Sky, NZ

“Through regular qigong practice, my back pain is healed and my spine is more flexible. I had also been suffering severe shoulder pain for months. Just like a miracle, after one qigong class the pain had gone. The pain did come back a couple of days later, but much milder. After regular practice, I am pain free. This was a wow fact for me. I LOVE the feeling of connectin to the Universal Qi, and would like to share qigong with others.”
~ Graham Good, NZ

Regular Classes: school term
$150 (10 classes) or $17 casual
Qigong CDs and books are available for your better improvement

Hi there,

I am an artist and teacher seeking freelance work in illustration or design. I hand draw and also use some apps to create a wide variety of images. I love portraits! Have had some experience doing murals, and enjoy storytelling. Recently, I`Ve been travelling and sketching around the South Island but due to car troubles, I am now carless and in need of work around Christchurch. No job too big or too small, and very reasonable rates. You can visit www.robertmorris.co.nz... for a sampling of my work. And if you like it, I`d really appreciate it if you bought a print. I can be contacted on 0224004387 - thanks.

This year's event runs from March 20 - 30th with the theme being 'The Great Plant Swap' as an easy way for neighbourhoods to grow stronger together.

Here's some ideas for ways you could get involved:

• swap seeds with a neighbour
• gift a plant you've grown to a neighbour
• take some flowers to a neighbour
• organise a produce swap
• share garden tips or recipes for food in season
• create community gardens or berm pollinator pathways
• host an inclusive garden-themed working bee
• a friendly neighbourhood BBQ with homegrown ingredients

The options are endless! At the end of the day, our shared aim is to help bring people together by encouraging intentional connection with our neighbours. Whether that be organising a street party, sharing a cuppa, or simply saying ‘Kia Ora!” to those who live around you, every action helps to create a safer and more connected New Zealand.
