Already a bustling harbour with safe anchorage and natural resources, it gradually grew as ships arrived and people began to settle there and further afield.
Lyttelton received category one historic area status in 2009, recognising historical, social, architectural and archaeological significance to the early pioneers.
Despite significant damage from earthquakes, the township still has a wide range of buildings covering New Zealand's colonial history.
The newly redeveloped historic colonial walk of Lyttelton celebrates this history in a tour of the central township using photographs to show the changing face of the port town and a narrative to accompany each point on the tour.

Fed up and frustrated Christchurch residents have pleaded with the city council to get rid of a smelly compost plant they say is “slowly killing” them.

Bromley residents have been complaining to the Christchurch City Council about the “vile and putrid” smells and dust coming the plant, owned by the council and run by Living Earth, for 11 years.
Anger spilled out into the council chamber on Wednesday when residents called on the council to move the plant to a rural area away from homes. Four residents spoke at the council meeting and another five submitted written statements.
The residents have little faith that a proposed $17.5 million upgrade of the plant will make any difference to the odour.

A sighting of two endangered newborn dolphins has prompted renewed calls for fishing restrictions around Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula.

Good morning to you all. Am I the only person that is absolutely sick of the chlorine in our water. Also the smell from Living Earth is so bad here in Woolston it’s getting to the point of not opening my windows.
