A Christchurch woman is distraught after her golden retriever puppy was allegedly stolen while her children played at a park.
Hayley Fahey said “there's been a mountain of tears” following the alleged theft of the family’s 9-month-old dog, Nala, from Barrington Park on Wednesday.
Fahey was with her two children and dog at the busy park when she took her eyes off the dog for “three minutes tops” about 12.30pm.
The puppy was on a lead, which was securely looped around a tree.
“I know I can’t prove she was stolen, but her lead was looped around a tree and through the handle - there’s no way she could’ve escaped,” Fahey said.
“Even if she had been able to get free, she wouldn’t have run away. She would’ve run straight to us and been all over the children.”
Fahey said she is shocked by how quickly it happened and that, in a park full of about 50 people, nobody saw anything.
“I turned my back to help my friend’s daughter down from a rock and when I turned back, she was gone."
Her two children, aged 10 and 7, helped Fahey canvas the park looking for Nala by showing people pictures and asking for sightings.
“They were great, they went into action mode. Since then though, there’s been a mountain of tears and bedtime has been hard. We don’t understand how someone could do this.”
Fahey had reported the suspected theft to police, who she said confirmed her fears were “probably correct”.
She said she had been encouraged to use social media to find leads and share Nala’s photograph. Her original post has been shared 1400 times.
“I’m just freaking out because I Googled what happens to stolen dogs," she said.
“I don’t want to believe the worst case scenario, but it’s hard not to.”

Reflecting on when she first moved to the leafy village, Marie says, “Sarah (Guest Service Manager) got to know me in the first week. I had dinner with her.” Adding with a smile, “The chef here is absolutely marvelous.”
But Marie’s social life isn’t limited to delicious dinner dates; there’s always something happening at The Bellevue. “Sarah gets to know the residents and what they want to do. Everyone is different and has different needs. She’ll arrange things for what we want to do.”
Our Care Suites not only offer both Rest Home and Hospital care but feel like home too, with a living area, kitchenette and ensuite. And Marie couldn’t be happier. “I love my room. I have a little outside patio area. I can boil the jug and make myself a cup of tea and I can entertain friends. I have miles of photos up. I like having lots of photos around me.”
At The Bellevue, Marie has found that feeling many of us are searching for, “I wake up every morning and feel good.”

Emma Milburn and Dart have been a search and rescue tag team for nearly a decade.
But as bearded border collie Dart, 13, gets older, she soon faces retirement, bringing an end to the special career shared between her and her handler.
The pair have been through a lot together. Milburn did all of Dart’s search and rescue training herself, pretty much everyday for eight years straight. The time and dedication it took to train a dog to be operational in search and rescue tasks was often overlooked, Milburn said.

Since September 2016, the council has spent about $49 million refurbishing and modernising the street, which stretches from Hagley Park to Church Corner.
The work has added bus and cycle lanes, made safety improvements to intersections, and replaced scores of old wastewater and water pipes that had reached the end of their usable life.
The final phase of work involves laying new pipes under a 1.7km stretch of Riccarton Rd between Matipo St and Hansons Lane.
The city council's infrastructure, planning and regulatory services general manager, Jane Davis, said this phase would be completed by the end of February.
It would take until the end of March to complete most projects in surrounding streets, she added.
“[After this], we do not have any roadworks or major maintenance planned for Riccarton Rd,” Davis said, though she pointed out that, as with any road, unplanned work could arise.
