No majority in vote to pursue Linwood Village upgrade

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Linwood Village is in desperate need of the Christchurch City Council’s long-awaited investment, community leaders say.

However, the work, which was first promised more than 10 years ago, is not likely to happen any time soon.

The village, which is centred around Stanmore Rd between Hereford and Gloucester streets, was severely affected by the 2011 earthquakes, with 60% of its commercial buildings either lost or damaged.

Plans to spruce up the area have been continually delayed and then last year the council came up with a $2m plan to make the area more welcoming and people-friendly.

However, the project is now one of 11 transport projects worth a total of $26m, under threat because Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency funding is on hold, awaiting direction from the incoming Government.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
