On this day, 106 years ago, New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Nowadays, Anzac Day serves as a day to acknowledge all those who have died in warfare, and honours returned servicemen and women.

Traditional dawn services have returned across New Zealand this year, after the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to them last year.

Cat Rescue are having a collection at Halswell New World this Saturday 24/04/2021 from 9.00-5.00

We will have eftpos for the first time, if you would like to make a donation but do not have cash.

We have cards to the value of $5, $10 and $20 if you are thinking of a cool present to give to your mother for mothers day. She will get a voucher to say she has donated to our amazing cause.

We take cash donations and donations of cat food (tins of smelly food for trapping (usually the cheap fishy version) and cat/kitten sachets and biscuits)

We take donations of kitty litter

We take donations of paper towels, washing powder and disinfectant and cleaning products.

We also just love to take cat stories and share photo's of our fur babies and yours (via phone photo's)..........lol

Hope to see you if you are in the area.

If I have not posted in an area close to the supermarket and you know a cat lover that would support use, please give them a bell and tell them we are down there tomorrow. I am not sure if I have covered the likes of Aidianfield nor Halswell as those names did not come up in the area;s to tick.

thank you in anticipation

Hi Canterbury,

How are you commemorating Anzac Day? What stories have been passed down through your whānau?

April 25 marks the 106-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, one of the most costly campaigns for the Allied Forces during World War I.

Anzac dawn and commemorative services up and down the country are scheduled to get underway after widespread cancellations last year, due to the nation being under Alert Level 4 restrictions.

The NZDF have advised of a reduced presence of military personnel at Anzac services due to deployment at MIQ facilities.

You can check out where the Anzac day services are on this interactive map on the RSA website.

Feel free and share your stories below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comments used in the Northern Outlook.

Mike Yardley: How can so many New Zealanders still smoke?

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

The proposed Smokefree 2025 Action Plan includes significantly reducing the number of retailers able to sell tobacco, limiting the nicotine content of cigarettes, and raising the age of purchase every year, so that anyone born after 2004 could never lawfully be sold tobacco.

Columnist Mike Yardley says most lower-income earners who smoke shell out more money in tobacco excise than they do in income tax.

"They should be vigorously urged to switch to vaping as a smoking cessation alternative, given it’s not just far less hazardous to their health, but also to their back pocket," he says.

What do you think of the proposed Smokefree 2025 reforms? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
