Christchurch’s city centre is awash with “dirty, dusty, gravel pits” and the council has had enough.

About 120 car parks within the four avenues are potentially operating without the necessary consent, stifling the city’s revitalisation.

The Christchurch City Council will this month send letters to owners of those sites, giving them 90 days to either cease their operations or apply for and be granted a resource consent.

If they fail to do so, the council could issue owners with a $300 fine and issue an abatement notice to cease the activity. Owners who ignore the notice could face court action. Read more here.

The owner of a Banks Peninsula tourist attraction is “flabbergasted” at her endless battle to expand her garden and build a cafe – with bureaucratic consenting costs spiralling to $165,000.

Josie Martin, owner of The Giant’s House mosaic garden in Akaroa, has already spent $97,000 and three years trying to get a consent from Christchurch City Council.

She is now facing additional costs of $67,000 after commissioner David Mountfort decided her consent application needed to be publicly notified.

Do you think this amount of $$$ in consent costs is reasonable?

If you’re after a good brew, Fumi Takai is the man for you.

The Japanese native and long-term Cantabrian recently won outstanding barista of the year at the Canterbury Hospitality Awards, and said he didn’t know he was nominated until one of his customers told him.

Stationed at Riverside Market in the central city since October 2019, Takai’s Espresso Studio by Fushoken has become a staple caffeine hotspot for many who work in the CBD.

Takai found out about his nomination two weeks prior to the ceremony when a customer began to congratulate him. Confused, he searched Facebook and found his name with a list of nominees and decided he would go to the ceremony, but never expected to win.

“I was so happy. To be nominated in the top four was great, but to win the award was special.”

Takai has developed a strong regular customer base in just under a year – estimating that about 70 per cent of his customers had been there before.

Have you been to Takai's coffee shop?
