In Banks Peninsula 51 per cent of voters backed cannabis legalisation, while in Christchurch Central and Christchurch East it was 54 per cent.
The preliminary results of the cannabis referendum, released on Friday October 30, showed 53.1 per cent of voters said “no” to a question of whether the Government should legislate to legalise recreational cannabis.
In the suburbs of Ilam and Wigram, 53 per cent and 51 per cent voted no.
In the mid-Canterbury electorates there was a more resounding response, with Selwyn (58.9 per cent) and Waimakariri (58.3 per cent) voting no.
Christchurch Central’s 54 per cent backing of cannabis reform contrasts with Wellington Central, where 72 per cent voted yes.
And in Auckland Central – where Green Party drug reform spokeswoman Chloe Swarbrick is the MP – 67 per cent of people voted yes.
The $20 million hub, planned for Salisbury St and Gracefield Ave, has been granted a resource consent, despite vehement opposition from neighbours.

In a decision released on Monday, commissioner Ken Lawn ultimately decided the city-wide community benefits of the hub “marginally outweigh” adverse effects on neighbours, despite his view that the facility would be inconsistent with the district plan.

Popular wine bar Cellar Door was named supreme establishment of the year; barbecue joint Smokey T's claimed the people’s choice award; Child Sister won the outstanding café award and OGB won best bar for the fourth year running.
The Vagabond Chefs won the community award for their efforts following the Covid-19 alert level 4 lockdown. They contributed regular donations of resources and food to Christchurch City Mission and KidsCan to help those most in need.
In the individual categories, Inati eatery chef Simon Levy took out outstanding chef of the year, Charles Guillotine Gillet of The Last Word claimed bartender of the year, whilst barista of the year went to Fumihiko Takai of Espresso Studio by Fushoken, in Riverside Market.
