Bishopdale intersection

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

A Christchurch community board has sided with 834 residents who are calling for traffic lights to be installed at the Harewood, Breens and Gardiners roads intersection.

The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board unanimously decided on Saturday to recommend lights be installed, despite council staff opposing the idea.

Council staff asked the board not to favour traffic lights because an independent safety review said lights were likely to increase the chance of a serious or fatal crash. Staff recommended changes to the configuration of the intersection, but this was not favoured by the board.

A final decision will be made by the council, following a recommendation from the infrastructure, transport and environment committee.
