Plans for 270 new houses and apartments, a supermarket, shops, eateries, a tavern, a cinema, a gym and an indoor pool have been given the go ahead for Christchurch's fastest-growing suburb.

The Environment Court has approved a proposal from supermarket company Woolworths to build the subdivision on 21 hectares on Halswell Rd, on the north side of Halswell.

The southwestern suburb already has more home building under way than any other part of Christchurch.

Australia-based Woolworths, owner of the Countdown brand in New Zealand, bought the land for $27 million from three owners about four years ago. The site is mostly farmland and sits opposite the Aidanfield subdivision. Continue reading here.

Another great story!
Southland father and son, Robert and Bobby Baird have recently received their forestry qualifications, proving you are never too old to learn.

While Robert has practical experience gained during four decades in the bush, he says vocational training like the qualification he has just done is helping keep people safe.

Competenz assessor Neville Muir worked with Bairds throughout their training programme.

“Bobby is very driven to succeed and very organised. He’s also very keen to continue upskilling his crew and there are a lot of different certificates still to do,” he says.

While Bobby is his boss at work, Robert turns back into ‘dad’ at the end of the day. “I give him a hand during the day when he’s got a lot of work on. We have a great relationship and it’s a magic thing to be able to do to work with your son.”

After missing out on seeing fluffy chicks and bouncing lambs last year, kids will be able to attend the country’s biggest agricultural show for free this year.

The New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch was cancelled last year, the first time since World War II, due to the uncertainty created by Covid-19.

The event’s organisers, the Canterbury A&P Association, decided earlier this year to go ahead with the 2021 event and the latest Covid-19 outbreak has not changed its view.

The association has also decided for the first time to allow kids aged up to 17 to attend for free. In previous years, only under 5s have been free.
