Western Waikato Emergency Operating Centre controller David Simes says vulnerable people who are not online may be missing out on key information.
Many local newspapers have stopped publishing due to the new delivery restrictions for COVID-19 but information continues to be shared digitally, or via radio and tv stations.
Residents in Waipa, Otorohanga and Te Kuiti who can access latest information are being asked to share this with people who may not be set up or able to get information online otherwise.
“Some of our most vulnerable people may be missing out on key information such as how to get help or who to call for household goods or services,” Simes said.
“With the close of local community newspapers, we’re asking people to please share the latest information with people you know may not be able to get it by otherwise.”
Accurate information sharing is also key with Simes noting people who are keeping other informed to ensure that the information sharing is accurate.
“Civil defence messages are shared through local council social media pages and websites so we encourage you to follow their pages if you can.”
“Before sharing, make sure you’ve verified the information first. Check out the www.covid19.govt.nz... or www.health.govt.nz... websites.”
A Waikato Welfare Call Centre was set up yesterday for people to gain assistance with household goods and services. The number to phone is 0800 800 405.
Callers will go through a needs assessment and will be referred to the person’s local emergency operating centre who will be in touch to coordinate assistance.
People sharing information should abide by COVID-19 guidelines for physical distancing and are encouraged to phone to relay information where possible.

Hi neighbours,
All non-essential businesses were required to shut their doors once the coronavirus lockdown came into effect, with only supermarkets and pharmacies among the few still trading.

However, the government has made changes to the essential services list, allowing a number of retailers the opportunity to open their doors and sell select products they deemed essential to life in New Zealand. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) announced the changes on Tuesday.

Here's a link with an update of which shops will be open for the remainder of lockdown and what you can purchase from them.

I understand it is facilitated through the Salvation Army and donations are used in the area they are gifted from. Apparently it went live on Friday afternoon and last night was already up to $700,000. That is amazing and great that the idea came out of our backyard. Well done Zuru. You out there might know about it, but we didn't. I will track them down and donate now!

Time is short. Speed of change is everything.

This past month, my phone has rung again & again with business owners who are in desperate need of help. Our front-line staff have had exactly the same experience.

The situation with SME’s is extremely dire. Some businesses have already permanently closed down & many others are rapidly heading that way.

Most NZ businesses now need to rapidly move online - in every possible area. The need is overwhelming.

We have been working around the clock, day and night, weekdays and weekends, retooling our key products & production systems in order to give us the capability for the quick deployment of large volumes of full-functioned eCommerce websites. And now the day has arrived.

We are offering to build up to 500 businesses a full-functioned eCommerce website, targeting rapid two-day deployment times – for free (excl transaction fees).

By rapidly deploying an eCommerce website, a business will be able to quickly offer their products or services right now (subject to lockdown) or get ready to offer their products and services once lockdown is eased.

We invite SME businesses to find out more here - www.zeald.com...

Waitomo, Waipā and Ōtorohanga residents can now freephone 0800 800 405 if they are struggling to access food, groceries, medication or other household goods and services.
The freephone service, established by the Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group, is available between 7am and 7pm daily, but does not replace other government helplines already in operation.
“We’ve moved quickly to set up this helpline, which started operating today. We don’t know how big the need is right now, and the reality is that it’s likely to change while we’re under Alert Level 4,” said Waikato Region Civil Defence Group Controller, Julian Snowball.
“People who don’t need help right now may require assistance in a couple of weeks, and that’s where this freephone number will become more important when it comes to ensuring everyone has access to the basic necessities.”
Being in lockdown makes us experience all sorts of things: anxiety, loneliness, fear. Need to talk? Free phone or text 1737.
All health updates on COVID-19 or information on community-based assessment centres are managed by the Ministry of Health. Go to covid19.govt.nz for more information.

The deadline for Waipā Youth Awards applications has been extended in the wake of the nationwide lockdown.

Now in its 18th year, the awards recognise achievements in academic, community service, leadership, sporting and arts/culture categories.

Youth aged 14-18 years who live in, or have attended school in Waipā for at least six months of the 2019 academic year are eligible to enter. Applicants will now have until 5pm, Friday 29 May to apply.

The awards night event was cancelled earlier this month due to restrictions around mass gatherings and will be replaced with an online announcement of award-winners in July, in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.

Mayor Jim Mylchreest said it was important to recognise Waipā young leaders in this unprecedented time.

“Although the awards might look different this year, we will still celebrate our exceptional young people and their contribution to our schools and communities,” he said.

“Young people play a vital role in creating the wonderful place that Waipā is – and our nationwide lockdown doesn’t change that.”

Last year’s awards attracted the largest number of applicants ever, with 122 nominations received and 78 awards handed out.

Nomination forms are available at waipadc.govt.nz/youthawards.

Residents living in Waitomo, Ōtorohanga and Waipa districts who are in need of help are being asked to seek assistance through official channels.

Western Waikato Emergency Operating Centre (WWEOC) Controller David Simes says residents should follow the information set out on the Government website at COVID19.govt.nz.

He says the WWEOC is hearing of people in the community who are still unsure of where to go for help, particularly if they are feeling unwell, are unsure about self-isolation, are seeking financial assistance, or just need to talk to someone.

“The best way to find out what support is available is by going to the dedicated COVID-19 website,” says Simes.

“If someone in the household is developing symptoms of COVID-19 like a cough, fever, shortness of breath, sneezing or a runny nose, please follow the advice from the Ministry of Health and contact your regular GP or Healthline on 0800 358 5453. If you are in need of urgent assistance call 111.”

He said managing mental well-being was especially important right now.

“Support with grief, anxiety, distress or mental well-being is available by calling or texting 1737 – free, anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will reach a trained counsellor,” he said.

For anyone unsure of what financial assistance may be available, visit the website or call the free government helpline on 0800 779 997, which operates from 8am–1am, 7 days a week.

“The website also includes information on self-isolation, limiting contact with other people if you’re unwell, and maintaining good hygiene practices. It’s a great tool for us all to use and I encourage everyone to use this as their main source of information.”
