Inland Revenue (IRD) is contacting investors to correct their tax rate after an estimated $42 million was overpaid by around 950,000 New Zealanders in the 2019 tax year.

Brian from New Lynn

IRD said that 1.5 million New Zealand investors, including KiwiSavers, were on the incorrect prescribed tax rate (PIR). Around 550,000 of those have underpaid their investments, according to IR, with an average of $80-$90 owing in tax. Around 550,000 of those have underpaid their investments, according to IR, with an average of $80-$90 owing in tax. However, almost double that number have overpaid by an average of $44 per person. Inland Revenue deputy commissioner Sharon Thompson said current legislation does not allow for a refund of overpayment. Ms Thompson said trying to go back over past years and determine incorrect payments based on wrong PIRs would have required significant work not just for Inland Revenue but for individual taxpayers and financial institutions. "For the 2019 tax year, an estimated $42 million was overpaid. Current estimates show between $45 and $50 million of investment tax was underpaid, and that will be recovered," she said. "But these figures are changing as IR's new system continues to receive information." Ms Thompson said IRD will be getting in contact with investors to correct the error. "From mid-July 2019, we'll begin proactively contacting customers who are on an incorrect PIR to let them know they need to change it to avoid paying too little or too much tax in the future. They can then contact their investment provider to change their rate."And in the future, we'll contact customers during the year if we identify they are using an incorrect PIR. This will be an on-going process to ensure that customers can get things right from the start."

They are suggesting a speed of 60-80 km/h should apply in areas where 100km/h applies as well as 30-40 km/h for most urban areas - WHAT A JOKE!!!
Instead of reducing the speeds to a speed where a walking horse could overtake us, how about they invest all of those various taxes that they have been taking from us and repair all of the dangerous roads - NATIONWIDE!!
We have our fuel taxed into the 'beyond stupidity' category and now they want to reduce (ridiculously) the speed limit.
Peak hour traffic will be constant 24/7.
As it was quoted by Mr Leggett, "that would severely restrict the movement of freight and the productivity of New Zealand's economy, as well as having a major impact on the everyday lives of drivers"
They could also consider retraining recidivist drivers.
There also has to be more intensive training for tourists that hire rental cars.
Also, here's an idea, they could invest more money into the Police and reintroduce the dedicated department for traffic only.
Then they could focus on getting most of the bad/unlicensed drivers off the roads, dangerous cars off the road and then the Police will have more time to focus on the criminals in the nationwide communities.
Our Police are stressed to the max with their heavy workloads as it is, and seem to have been since the traffic department was removed.
Maybe this could a possible start to an easy solution to get the number of deaths on the road down, not the knee jerk reaction of reducing the speed.

Driving in the Waterview Tunnel

Oh how quick some people have chosen to forget, or maybe they didn't even bother with the rules from the beginning.
These people include someone from all groups on the roads, truck drivers, taxi drivers, all forms of cars, vans & 4 wheel drives and even motorbikes.
The few who seem to think that they are immune from the rules for driving in the tunnel, here is a refresher course for you.
1. NO SPEEDING! The speed limit is 80 (max) If there’s an incident the Tunnel Operators can change the speed limit via the variable message signs for safety reasons.
Unless it's peak hour traffic, that does not mean that you can do 50 or 60 or out of peak hour traffic 100 or 120!!!
2. KEEP YOUR LIGHTS ON!! While you are in the tunnel you must keep your lights on - as the signs tell you. You need to be seen early and not last minute. NOT ON HIGH BEAM!
3. NO CHANGING LANES!!! The solid white line means no over taking or switching lanes. Switching lanes can cause incidents and traffic jams. Plan your journey, get in to the correct lane early. If you are unsure which lane you need, keep the middle lane.
4. NO TAILGATING!! Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
5. DO NOT STOP!! You can’t Stop, U-turn or Reverse.
As always, the standard motorway rules apply.
6. Car issues? Move left or right
If your vehicle is breaking down or not working as it should, move in to the left or right lanes and avoid the middle lane if possible. Ensure your vehicle has sufficient fuel before entering the tunnel.
7. Dangerous Goods vehicles, vehicles over 4.3m high and vehicles carrying loose bulk loads aren’t allowed - find another route!
8. Follow the signs. They are there to inform you of any speed restrictions, which lane you need to use and other important information.
Drive to the conditions, drive safely and be considerate of other drivers around you.

In the US last year, Mom's Organic Market founder and CEO Scott Nash did something many are afraid to do: He ate a cup of yoghurt months after its expiration date. And then tortillas a year past their expiration date.

"I mean, I ate heavy cream I think 10 weeks past date," says Nash, "and then meat sometimes a good month past its date. It didn't smell bad. Rinse it off, good to go."

It was all part of his year-long experiment to test the limits on food that had passed its expiration date.
