These tracks have been closed for a while to protect kauri trees.
There are two options to upgrade and reopen the connection, while protecting kauri in the area. The options will be coming to our October meeting for a decision, and if supported, work should begin later this year or early next year and take up to 10 months to complete.
* Option 1: A tree-top high boardwalk with a 60m long, 18m high glulam bridge that will enable a scenic step-free walk between Kauri Glen Road and Tui Glen Road (the portion to Raymond Terrace will have steps).
* Option 2: A staircase and boardwalk following a similar route to the existing track, with a 10m bridge at the bottom of the gully.
* Option 3: Permanently close the tracks.
Option 1 is preferred by Te Kawerau a Maki, Northcote College and Kauri Glen Bush Society Incorporated.

Roll 1k for MDA is an annual event where people roll 1km on any kind of wheels to fundraise for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of New Zealand.
This year the event is taking place virtually, with people rolling in their respective bubbles and sharing photos online.
MDA member Neil Singh has Duchenne muscular dystrophy which led to the deterioration of his skeletal, heart and lung muscles.
His parents Yasha Aggarwal and Kuldeep Singh said MDA has provided vital support for Neil.
“They knew everything, every emotion without us mentioning it,” the couple said.
“MDA has held our hand and helped us with various stages of Neil’s condition.”
People are encouraged to get creative and complete their journey on any kind of wheels like wheelchairs, electric scooters, skateboards, roller skates and push bikes.

Orthodontic treatments can improve teeth that are crooked, misaligned, or crowded - leaving you with not only a beautiful smile but also a massive boost in confidence.
Braces aren’t just for cosmetic purposes, they can correct the alignment of your teeth and improve the functionality of your jaw. With misaligned teeth, you may come across difficulties in eating, talking, and oral health upkeep (which puts you at risk of quite serious dental issues). Braces will gently move your teeth (and roots) to their optimal position, it does take many months - however, once treatment is complete the beautiful results are lifelong.

You may have also heard that councils around NZ are turning against the proposal, and that Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has criticised it.
Instead of lending to councils to upgrade their infrastructure, the Government's proposal is for councils to hand over control of all drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to four new unelected organisations that will be able to borrow money, but will not have elected members to represent those who will need to pay this money back through their water bills. This is very undemocratic.
Auckland is proposed to come under "Entity A" which will also be responsible for all of the infrastructure in Whangārei, Kaipara and the Far North. Aucklanders will therefore likley need to contribute to funding new infrastructure further North.
Auckland Council has identified a large list of concerns with the proposal, including many assumptions by the Government that are incorrect, including financial. For more info, see this memo sent to local boards: www.johngillon.co.nz...
On Wednesday, the Kaipatiki Local Board called on Auckland Council to REJECT AND OPT OUT of the Three Waters Reform proposal.
There are many problems with the Three Waters proposal, but the main ones are:
* The removal of ratepayer-owned water and wastewater assets from council control,
* The possible removal of stormwater infrastructure from council control (including portions of associated parks, such as streams, ponds and dryponds used as sportsfields, etc),
* The lack of accountability to elected members that the new entity would have, and the undemocratic lack of local decision-making over public water assets,
* The ability to give effect to Auckland Council’s long term planning and strategies when water infrastructure is not controlled by Council,
* The focus on upgrading existing infrastructure in other parts of the Entity A region, and not ensuring a coordinated investment in growth areas of Auckland,
* Lack of clarification on the ownership of stormwater within reserves and park land where there is the opportunity to ensure multiple community outcomes, such as bio-diversity, community volunteer involvement, aesthetic values.
Councillors will be considering their feedback to the Government on Thursday 23 September.
