With NZQA approval for 13 micro-credentials, the New Zealand School Food and Wine hopes to inspire and attract new people to jobs in hospitality, wine and tourism and also enhance wider community understanding of our food and beverage story.

We export food and wine to the world, yet pride in this achievement is often lacking by our own communities.

There is a crisis right now because job-seekers, including school leavers, are being pushed into other industries especially the building trades. There is a perfect storm of government incentives paid to employers, along with negative counsel from career advisors and families warning young people off seeking careers in hospitality and tourism. This is resulting in a critical lack of workers.

In developing this suite of short, part-time micro-credentials that range from classic cooking to food and beverage history to food costing and digital marketing, we are seeking to inspire people to dip their toes into our sector, even if they are currently working or studying elsewhere.

In addition, these micro-credentials enable people already employed to develop new skills and craft new talents but to also signal that this career pathways is valid, diverse and on-going. Just look at our food heros, like Peter Gordon and Annabel Langbein, now in their 60s, with a tremendous backstory.
From the various lockdowns, we know that people find joy in cooking and that people are curious to develop new talents in the kitchen; that wine and cocktails are cool and fun; that an important part of any tourism destination is the food and beverage offering whether as a winery cellar door experience or paddock to plate cuisine.

Online Options
Online study options are embedded in many of the short programmes, enabling people from around the country to study about New Zealand wine or learn how to write an electronic newsletter or find out more about our food history.
The micro-credentials are equally suitable for the consumer; the food and wine lover who just wants to learn more. In building broader community understanding and respect for the food and beverage culture of Aotearoa-New Zealand, inevitably we will see more people attracted to work in our sector. That is the shared goal of these new programmes.

Our neighbourhood white rabbit was killed the other day (thinking - by a dog) and left behind a smaller, younger companion. After watching it nudging the bigger rabbit to wake it and then laying beside it, on the road, we picked it up and took it home.

To our surprise, it's extremely tame, friendly and HEAPS of fun.

We cant keep it because our dog wants to hunt it.

We're hoping for a loving home with adults/children willing to spend time with it. It's playful, clean and not a fussy eater. It likes weeds, bread and vegetables.

Btw, we have wood fence panels and nails, if you need.

To our amazement, it let us pick it up and take it home. Since then, it's been running around the house treating us like a companion. It handles a cage but it's so special that we're hoping to find it a home where adults/children will give it attention.

We cant keep it because our dog wants to hunt it.

100% enjoyment guarateed. (we've even given it a bath and it's not a fussy eater - weeds, vegetables, bread, etc).

A popular family restaurant in Auckland inviting unvaccinated workers to apply for bar and restaurant roles on a "No Jab Jobs" website has had its ad removed.
=====================================
Lone Star New Lynn posted the advertisement on the site four days ago with a note saying the business "will not be discriminating either whilst employing or serving our guests".
=====================================
The job ad appears to contravene the vaccine mandate for close contact workers in the hospitality industry. The Herald spoke to owner Brendan Pascoe before the ad was removed yesterday but he refused to comment. "I'm not commenting, you are all pushing the same mandate so I know what will be said and I'm not interested. No comment," he said. When asked about the legalities of employing unvaccinated staff and serving unvaccinated customers, Pascoe again refused to comment. But Paul Steiner, operations manager for the Lone Star franchise, said the restaurant brand "took the health and safety of its franchisees, their staff, and customers very seriously". "All franchisees are required by the terms of their franchise arrangements to comply with all relevant laws, legislation, and government requirements, including health requirements." A spokesperson from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet said businesses covered by the My Vaccine Pass requirements need to ensure all workers are vaccinated. "If workers are not vaccinated at a hospitality business they cannot operate. "Vaccination in these sectors is an important tool for reducing infection and transmission." The countdown is on to December 3 when New Zealand moves to the traffic light system and restaurants, bars and cafes can open their doors to vaccinated patrons. Auckland, where the Lone Star restaurant is situated, will be at the Red phase where businesses can welcome up to 100 people based on 1m distancing with different groups of customers seated and separated. Vaccine passes must be viewed and verification is advised. If businesses do not comply with My Vaccine Pass requirements they can only offer contactless service. Events, restaurants, hairdressers and cafes that do not use vaccine certificates will not be allowed to open at all under the Red and Orange settings - except those that offer takeaway food. Epidemiologist Michael Baker said the Lone Star advertisement clearly went against the mandate for hospitality workers. "It's important to note customers going into any restaurant have an expectation that all the staff and other customers are vaccinated as mandated," he said. "To have an unvaccinated staff member in a role like that is a risk to others. Even with a mask, there is a risk, it is not eliminated." Chris Mole from the No Jab Jobs website said it wouldn't comment other than to say the Lone Star advertisement had since been removed. No other jobs advertised on the site are for jobs where vaccinations are mandated. On Tuesday, Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood announced new Covid-19 vaccination requirements. Vaccination was soon to be mandatory for all workers at any business where vaccine passports were required for customers.
