New fines for fare evaders now in force

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Aucklanders who sneak onto public transport without paying now face a hefty fine if caught, as new rules come into force this week. Instant fines of $150 will be issued to passengers who don't carry tickets. If they contest it in the courts, that could rise to $500.

Changes to the Land Transport Act provides powers to transport officers on Auckland's public transport network, and regulations, which came into force yesterday, enable the issue of infringement notices.
