Should more than 50,000 people receive funding for the drugs?
Government drug-funding agency Pharmac is expected to decide next week whether it will fund two new medicines to treat type 2 diabetes.
Botany resident Graham King and thousands of other people who suffer from the condition hope the decision will fall in their favour.
King (pictured) pays $100 a month for Dapagliflozin, which is used to treat the condition.
Despite the cost, he said it helps control his diabetes and has cut the amount of insulin he has to take.
He said he doesn't think people should endure what he has had to to get modern medicines, like Dapagliflozin, Empagliflozin and Dulaglutide, to treat the condition.
"I'm just lucky I can afford $100 a month."
Figures released by the Ministry of Health last year showed there were 45,266 people registered in the Counties Manukau area with type 2 diabetes in 2019.
Pharmac chief executive Sarah Fitt said that next week its board will look at funding both Empagliflozin and Dulaglutide for 50,000 New Zealanders with type two diabetes who have a high risk of complications such as heart and kidney disease.
"Clinical experts told us that there is evidence for significant benefit from these two medicines in people with established or at high risk of cardiovascular and/or renal disease," she said.

But the lanes will stay the same for one week to give commuters time to get used to following the overhead signals.
The dynamic lanes will go live for the first time on November 9 between 3.30pm and 7pm on week days.

A report to Auckland Transport's (AT) board reveals it has misgivings about the planned redevelopment of Drury, which is likely to see the population soar in the next 30 years.
The paper said it is reviewing the private plan change proposals and what they entail for its funding of transport infrastructure.
Oyster Capital, Fulton Hogan and Kiwi Property are seeking to rezone about 330 hectares of land in the Drury East area from future urban to a mix of residential, business and open space zones.
A fourth smaller private plan change to rezone 33.7 hectares for mixed use housing by Karaka and Drury Consultant Limited was added to the public notification by council officers.
The AT report describes the changes as 'out of sequence' with the Auckland Plan 2050's Development Strategy and the Council's Future Urban Land Supply Strategy.
It states: “If these plan changes are approved by the council, there will be an expectation that the necessary transport infrastructure will be provided by AT to align with development demands.
“However, there is currently no funding allocated for these areas and overall funding over the next decade is under pressure. AT is working with council and government to identify potential funding and financing options, but it is not clear that will provide a timely solution.”
The paper says it would need to consider the area’s transport infrastructure requirements and how it could provide them, as well as how to align the public works with the staging and sequencing of the development.

They are invited to an information day this Saturday for the old Mangere Bridge replacement project.
People can meet the team behind the bridge build and learn more about the new walking, cycling and fishing bridge spanning the harbour.
The information day will be held from 9.30am to 1pm at the Waterfront Reserve in Mangere Bridge.
Visitors will be able to walk on the temporary staging, which is like a temporary road in the harbour, said Waka Kotahi senior manager project delivery Andrew Thackwray.
The staging allows cranes to move out over the water alongside where the new bridge is under construction.
Earmarked for completion in 2022, the new bridge will restore the walking, cycling and fishing connection to the Mangere Bridge and Onehunga communities.
The new bridge will boost space between the piers for waka, canoes and small watercraft to sail through Mangere Inlet.
Thackwray said the event will be a great chance for people to see close up what the team is doing.
"They are very proud of the progress they are making and will be on site to explain what they're doing and answer any questions," he said.
A sausage sizzle and activities to entertain children are also planned.
A limited number of people will be able to check out the big cofferdams created in the harbour to build the bridge piers.
A cofferdam is a watertight box made from joined steel plates driven up to 20 metres below the seabed and rising above the water level at high tide.
Workers had to pump 1.4 million litres of water to create a dry working space in one of the biggest cofferdams which stretches 25 metres by 12.5 metres.
A crane lowered a digger into the cofferdam to dig through 2.5 metres of mud to reach the seabed.
Workers then had to remove 1100 cubic metres of mud - enough to fill 187 trucks.
They poured a concrete floor which will be the foundation of construction of the first pier.
“The cofferdams and the temporary staging will only be in place for as long as they’re needed to construct the bridge, so this is a one-off chance for some people to come and see them up close and understand what they’re for," Thackwray said.
Tickets to the site tour will be limited and subject to health and safety requirements.
This part of the information day may be cancelled if bad weather hits.
