With Christmas fast approaching, Police are encouraging people to be aware of online phishing scams.
The holiday season can already be a stressful time, and the last thing you want is to lose large sums of money to a scam.
A phishing scam is an online scam, where the offender pretends to be a trustworthy person or organisation to try and get a victim’s personal information.
Police has received a number of phishing scam reports with offenders targeting people who are selling items or services online like Trade Me and Facebook Marketplace.
The offenders pretend to be an interested buyer, and urgently request to buy your product and arrange a courier pickup.
The victim receives a fake courier website link to complete a verification process asking for personal details, like bank account numbers, passwords, and phone numbers.
Once provided these details, the offender uses these to access a victim’s bank account, tricking the victim into proving any multifactor authentication code sent from the victim’s bank.
The money in the victim’s bank account is then taken by the offender once access is gained.
Police are urging members of the public to be cautious, especially when someone in person or online is asking you to give them money or your personal details like bank accounts and passwords.
Never comply with a request asking you to provide or ‘verify’ your online banking details.
Legitimate organisations will never ask you to do this.
If you are unsure if it is real, please contact your bank by the phone number on their official website or go to your nearest branch.
If you receive a courier website link from a potential buyer, this is likely a scam.
Please do not fill out the verification process.
Use the social media/trading platform’s reporting tools to report the scam and the user involved.
You can also make a report to Netsafe at report.netsafe.org.nz.
If you have handed over your online banking details, contact your bank immediately and suspend your account.
If you think you have been scammed (provided your banking details and/or suffered a loss), please gather as much information you can and make a report to Police online through 105.police.govt.nz or call 105.

Free - Huge Outdoor Playhouse or Small External Room.

Has been outside for 10 years serving our teenage daughters well as a playhouse. It is a solid construction of wood, corrugated Iron and glass windows. There is no electrics or insulation.

The playhouse is in dire need of TLC. It's mostly weathertight and dry, well it normally is but the door has disintegrated and needs to be replaced. Also, one window needs re-attaching that is on the ground, some of the railing and verandah is rotting and paint needs a touch up. I'm not a builder, but the bones seem strong. As is, where is.

Width 240 cm, Height 200cm (front cover, 250cm at apex), Depth 180cm (interior), 90cm (porch).
Fits a single bed.

We are moving house this weekend and need this gone. However, it is REALLY HEAVY and I don't use capitals lightly. Made of solid wood, four of us couldn't budge it but we are hardly piano movers. It was brought in on a truck with an articulated arm, then rolled in on metal pipes. Property is flat, but is located down the side of the house and is difficult to get a truck down under the eaves of the house.

If you have the machinery, know how or pure muscle to shift it, it's yours. But no, I won't be able to help. You'll need to send pics of how you are going to move it, but it has to go.

Police are warning drivers across Tāmaki Makarau to be on the lookout for dodgy tow truck drivers following several incidents in the past few months.

Motorists are being warned of a small group of people pretending to be tow truck drivers, committing crimes by using unregistered tow trucks to pick up vehicles.

Sergeant Suzannah Kimber, Counties Manukau Police, says the group steals vehicles by pretending to legitimately tow them before disposing of the vehicles.
“Recently these offenders towed a member of the public’s vehicle in plain sight.
“Members of the public drove past this tow truck while they were loading it up as it just looked normal.
“They even go as far as wearing high-visibility clothing.”

Sergeant Kimber says Police are taking the opportunity to remind the community that all tow trucks will have external sign writing with the company name and be able to produce their logbook if asked.
“They also must be registered as a transport operator.
“If you see a tow truck without any distinguishing features towing cars, please call Police immediately.”
