Mangere resident Emily Luatua, 24, is the leader of the youth group Do Good Feel Good that was started in 2015.
“We wanted to create change because young people don’t always see a problem in their health and well-being,” she said.
Luatua has organised tag team rugby tournaments through the group attracting hundreds of participants over the years.
She has been nominated as one of Westfield’s Local Heroes, an annual competition that acknowledges work in local communities by awarding grants.
“I felt overwhelmed to be nominated. I didn’t take up community work to ever be noticed,” she said.
“I was just trying to have a positive impact in south Auckland and New Zealand.”
The voting period for Westfield Local Heroes opens on Tuesday 25 August and closes on Monday 14 September.

Roadworks on Puinui Road blocking the pedestrian entrance to the Manukau Memorial Gardens have left it inaccessible by foot.
Under alert level 3 rules cemetery gates are required to be shut to unauthorised vehicles, resulting in the memorial being completely closed off.
Manurewa resident Chris Greyling 33, said it was “heart breaking” being prevented from visiting the cemetery.
“Stopping people from visiting the graves of their loved ones seems unusually cruel,” she said.
“Particularly for loved ones that have passed recently, this really is a discourteous act.”
Greyling wants to visit his mother-in-law, who recently passed away.
Auckland Council’s website outlines that under alert level 3 restrictions, all cemetery offices are temporarily closed to the public.
“Essential cemetery services continue to operate at our sites, in accordance with Level 3 requirements. Cemetery gates will be closed to non-authorised vehicles at our main sites,” it reads.
“However, access on foot and for exercise and recreation will remain open. We ask that everyone who visits the cemetery observes physical distancing requirements and avoids meeting anyone or congregating on site.”

Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes is a world-renowned collection from the Ancient Greek world, and is the largest selection of ancient artefacts ever loaned by the British Museum to New Zealand.
But challenges in bringing international exhibitions to Aotearoa during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have prompted the rescheduling of Ancient Greeks, which was due to open last month.
Auckland Museum chief executive Dr David Gaimster said the virus has had a major impact on touring exhibitions across the globe and here in Aotearoa.
“We continue to explore other exhibition offerings and their viability and remain committed to the importance of international special exhibitions in bringing the world to Auckland,’ he said.
“We continue to work with international partners on an exciting range of exhibitions for our domestic audiences and look forward to announcing these as soon as they are confirmed.”
The exhibition showcases a wide range of treasures and stories and includes a selection of iconic sculptures from the ‘Mausoleum at Halikarnassos’, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World.
