14th February - 10:45am Update: National State of Emergency
Minister for Emergency Management, Kieran McAnulty, has confirmed a National State of Emergency this morning due to the widespread damage across the country due to Cyclone Gabrielle.

While many regions have already declared a local state of emergency, a National State of Emergency gives the National Controller legal authority to apply resources across the country in support of a national level response.

Here's what you need to know:
- Heavy rain red warnings are in place for Northland and Hawke's Bay, with red strong wind warnings also for Northland, Coromandel and Taranaki. Check all weather warnings on the MetService website.
- States of emergency have been declared in Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Ōpōtiki, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato District, Hauraki District, Whakatāne District, Bay of Plenty, Napier and Hastings.
- There has been a landslide in Murawai with one firefighter missing.
- Gisborne is feared cut off and the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Residents are to take note of the Welfare Centres for Gisborne and Coromandel.
- A number of road closures are in place across the North Island. View these on the Waka Kotahi NZTA website.
- Fire and Emergency is urging people to only call 111 if life or safety is at risk after a surge in calls.
- In Auckland there are 27 shelters and civil defence centres where people can go in an emergency.

Stuff are posting live updates and have shared what you need in your 3-day emergency kit. Stay up to date with Civil Defence updates and track the storm here.

2pm Update for Hawke's Bay:
Multiple evacuations needed in Puketapu, Esk Valley, Rissington, Omahu, Waiohiki, Jervoistown and Meeanee and Waipawa.
Many remain trapped in cars and houses. Several bridges have been taken out with access between Hastings and Napier now cutoff. More than 20,000 people are without power and cellphone communication in and out of the region is patchy.
Omahu residents needing shelter can go to Hastings Sports' Centre. Taradale residents can head to St Joseph's Māori Girls' School.

Kia ora neighbours,

My flatmates and I are being turfed out of our rental due to flood damage. I am hoping to find a room in Takapuna for a short time, between 2-3 months, until a room in my friend's home opens up. I could also be looking for longer term, if that were available. I'd be looking to move in about a month at the most, maybe earlier if I could. I'm a 31 year old woman, a stage manager for a kid's theatre, and I've been the head tenant of my 4 bedroom since 2019. I know how to keep a home tidy and clean, and I'm a quiet, responsible and easy going flatmate who doesn't smoke or drink. I'm out of the house most of the time rock climbing or hiking when I'm not working. I'm looking to be within walking distance of The PumpHouse Theatre ideally, which is the area I'm in now. Can pay rent and contribute to bills, great references, good at gardening and keeping house plants alive. Not afraid of spiders or wetas. If anyone has a room or knows of someone who does, please let me know. I hope everyone is staying safe and gets through this next bit of foul weather ok. Thanks!

Cheers,
Katie

Feedback on 81 dwellings proposed for 13 Cresta Ave and 96 Beach Haven Rd

John Gillon from John Gillon - Kaipatiki Local Board

Many in Beach Haven have been very concerned about the recent proposal for 81 dwellings at 96 Beach Haven Rd/13 Cresta Ave, when the site is zoned single house zone. The public meeting in January attracted 180 local people who were not opposed to development at the site, but very concerned at the unexpected scale of the proposal, the inadequate local infrastructure and the numerous breaches of the Auckland Unitary Plan.
In the attached PDF is the official feedback on the proposal from the Kaipātiki Local Board. We believe that it makes a mockery of the city being able to plan properly for growth.
It is a significant infringement of such magnitude that we have been left asking "what is the point of the Unitary Plan, Residential Zones or indeed any development rules, if they could be discarded to this extent?"

- Submissions are now closed and we are waiting for a date for a hearing.
