The Reform of the Residential Tenancies Act
The reform of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) will modernise New Zealand’s rental laws and align
them with present day realities of renting in New Zealand. It aims to promote good faith relationships
in the renting environment, and to ensure there are appropriate protections in place for both tenants
and landlords.
These reforms reflect that more New Zealanders are living in rental accommodation and for longer
periods of time. The RTA governs the relationship between the estimated 617,800 households in the
rental market and their landlords.
