A youth group in Mt Roskill has created 50 care packages to distribute to homeless people in their community.

The initiative was launched by Raise Up, a YMCA programme run out of the Lynfield Youth and Leisure Centre.

15 kids from four local schools came together to fundraise for items and create the care packages.

YMCA youth empowerment supervisor Chelsea Harnell said the kids picked what’s in the packages and built them from scratch.

“They just compiled a variety of different items that they think vulnerable people will need.”

The packages consist of sanitary products like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo, as well as muesli bars and water.

Generation Ignite, a group that runs a food bank in New Lynn, will coordinate with the youth group to distribute the care packages when lockdown laws have relaxed.

The kids involved are aged from 13 to 18 and come from Mount Roskill Grammar School, Lynfield College, Marist College and Green Bay High School.

Raise Up is the YMCA’s youth programme run by youth for youth and operates from locations across New Zealand.

Found: cockatiel with orange foot band in Mt Roskill

Eveline from Mount Roskill

We have unfortunately found a dead grey cockatiel at our home in Three Kings / Mt Roskill.

It had been dead for a little while already so I didn't take a photo.

The only identifier was a dark orange band on its foot.
