When: Saturday 12 April – Sunday 27 April
Cost: Normal entry (Free for HNZPT Members, Adults $10, Children 17 & under free)
Take a step back in time this school holidays and explore the three Auckland Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga properties Highwic, Alberton and Ewelme Cottage.
Each site offers a unique opportunity to experience the lives and homes of three Auckland families in the late 1800s.
Take part in a new House Hunts to explore the properties indoors and out and learn more about the history of these families and how they lived. Lots of fun facts, information to seek out, and prizes for completing the trail.
Highwic and Alberton are open Wednesday through to Sunday, and Ewelme Cottage on Sundays.

It will be worth the wait. Before it opens in 2026, critical work on Auckland’s rail network must be delivered first. This work will unlock faster journey times, fewer delays and trains every 4-5 minutes at peak.
From Saturday 12 April to Sunday 27 April 2025, no trains will be running. Rail replacement buses will replace trains while we upgrade the rail network and improve your journey.
Rail replacement bus services

All-stop bus services (RBE, RBS, RBO and RBW) will run throughout the closure with additional weekday express rail buses on the Southern Line (RBSX).
Customers with wheelchairs or mobility scooters that are too large to take on rail replacement buses will be able to book a free mobility taxi by phoning the Contact Centre on 09 366 6400.
Free travel for Veterans this ANZAC Day

This ANZAC Day, veterans and uniformed officers can travel for free with either a SuperGold card or an RSA membership card for uniformed and retired service personnel.
This applies across all AT Metro bus, rail bus, and ferry services. It excludes Fullers 360 Waiheke, SeaLink vehicle transport to/from Waiheke, Great Barrier Island and Rakinoferry services.
On ANZAC Day, there will be no trains; however, as well as the usual bus services, AT will provide additional early morning bus and rail replacement bus services, including:
• Additional NX1 services to the Auckland Domain will operate between Albany Bus Station to Park Road, Grafton at 4.30 am and 5 am.
• Additional rail replacement bus services will run to the Auckland Domain on all lines for early morning, pre-dawn services.
• Ferry services will be operating on a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable

Wet Plate Portrait Sessions with Adrian Cook

Photographer Adrian Cook crafts timeless portraits using the wet plate collodion process, a 19th century method of development that predates film photography. Each image is hand crafted, producing an original direct-positive image on a sheet of glass or aluminum plate.
Adrian will be on site at Highwic on Saturday 31 May & Sunday 1 June as part of the Auckland Photography Festival. Book in to get your portrait taken using this very special process.
The finished plates will be posted out to clients once varnished and cured, a week or so after their session. Sessions last 45 minutes, and are limited to 2 people per plate.
A selection of Adrian images will also be free to view on display in the Billard House, and bookings include entry to visit Highwic.

Kennedy Warne
Co-founder of New Zealand Geographic in 1988 and editor for 15 years, Kennedy has authored over five books. His latest, Soundings: Diving for Stories in the Beckoning Sea, chronicles his underwater adventures as a National Geographic reporter. Kennedy is also the outdoors and environment correspondent for RNZ’s Nine to Noon, presenting the segment Off the Beaten Track. In addition to his work for adults, Kennedy has written two children’s books in collaboration with illustrator Heather Hunt – The Cuckoo and the Warbler and It’s My Egg: And You Can’t Have It. He also contributes to the Māori-Pasifika magazine e-Tangata.
