Dear neighbours,

Please meet Alyce Read of Nelson, who uses her houseplant collection to connect with others and help them overcome mental health challenges. "You wouldn’t take a plant and put it in a dark corner and fail to water it and expect it to thrive. So we should look at ourselves that way," she says. "If we are not thriving in the way that we would wish, it might not be any fault of ours, it might be the conditions that we are under."

All it takes is a kind gesture to change someone’s day. From giving flowers to a neighbour ‘just because’ to paying it forward in line at a cafe - this month we’re encouraging our members and supporters to make New Zealand a better place one random act of kindness at a time.

The options for doing so are endless! Being kind doesn’t have to cost a thing, after all a smile is free. For those who want to go the extra mile, here’s some other ideas: take a gift over to new neighbours and introduce yourself, build a free community library for your street, buy extra kai at the grocery store to donate to a food bank, bring treats into work for colleagues, send an encouraging text to someone who needs it, let a car into the traffic ahead of you, write positive messages in chalk on sidewalks around your neighbourhood, or surprise loved ones with a visit.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re spreading kindness this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to:

Keep our Glendene Esplanade

I and my fellow friends who use that area for water born recreational activities and others who walk the track strongly oppose any return of the Glendene Esplanade water front and the public land bordering Span Farm. I know personally that the owners brought the land for the sole purpose of stopping someone else from buying it and then complaining about the dust etc that they create from there concrete crushing plant next door. I have been part of Span Farm for 17 years and when one of the past owners let the Esplanade lease go the council came in and removed all the buildings and had all removable property on the Esplanade removed and the owner was told not to use the Esplanade.
The owner of Span Farm has tried many times to stop people from enjoying the Esplanade as he believes he is entitled to it. He is still using the land now for personal gain and this must stop. Please action our request. We are passionate about our water front’s and that they be there for the good of the general public and not be released back to private enterprise. We don’t wish to go to the papers etc but will do if this matter continues to drag on.

Hey neighbours,

Restaurant Month is back for another year, set to bolster the Auckland culinary scene by offering discounted dishes and unique events for the entire month of August.

Gastronomes can expect 31 days of specially curated menus at the value-for-money price points of $25, $40 or $55+.

Restaurants included span those from the waterfront to the CBD, and from stalwarts such as Euro, Botswana Butchery and Odettes Eatery, to the newcomers and the underdogs.

Viv Beck, Heart of the City chief executive, said this year’s lineup is “more world-class than ever” thanks to the “inspiring lineup of chefs”, some of whom have recently returned to Auckland from stints overseas.

Come November 27, teams of brave inventors will hurl themselves off an Auckland pier and into the waters below, all in the name of Flugtag.

It’s a welcome return to New Zealand for the Red Bull Flugtag competition, which last graced our shores in 2004 when it was hosted in Wellington.

The competition will see amateur aviators design, build and then fly contraptions in a bid to be crowned winner.

The thousands of people set to descend upon Wynyard Quarter to see the event are likely to keep business booming for local hospitality hotspots.
