Auckland mountains closed as Guy Fawkes looms

Caryn Wilkinson Reporter from Community News

Fourteen Auckland mountains have been closed to the public to ward off blazes fuelled by fireworks.

The maunga (mountains) administered by the Tupuna Maunga Authority are closed to the public this week from 7.30 pm until November 8.

The decision to ban evening access follows fires at Mt Wellington and Mt Eden on Guy Fawkes night last year.

Fireworks sparked a blaze which tore through the crater of Mangere Mountain in December last year and another fire on Mt Wellington in April.

Last month another blaze caused by a group of youths playing with fireworks ripped through the lower slopes of Mt Wellington.

The following mountains will be closed: Wiri, One Tree Hill, Mount Wellington, Mount Eden, North Head, Mount Albert, Mount Hobson, Pigeon Mountain, Mount Richmond, Mount Roskill, Mount St John, Mount Victoria, Mangere Mountain, Big King.

Do you agree with the closures?

Are you planning to celebrate Guy Fawkes tomorrow night?

Poll: Should you ask before planting tall shrubs/trees near your property line?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

It may be fine now but in a few years trees can block out light or views for neighbours.

Do you think neighbours should ask before they go ahead and plant these?
