Motorists have been urged to watch out for road layout changes as the left-hand slip lanes on St Johns Rd and St Heliers Bay Rd will be closed during some of the work.

Development starts this week and is expected to finish in February.

The upgrade aims to boost safety for pedestrians and cyclists to move between the first section of the shared path and the second section being built.

The second section of the shared walking and cycling path will connect St Johns Rd with Ōrākei Basin boardwalk, and will link completed sections one and three.

Waka Kotahi acting senior manager of project delivery, Rod James,
said the agency wants to take advantage of reduced traffic volumes and get most of the upgrade finished before local schools open.

“Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience and understanding while we work to make the intersection safer for all road users.”

Board calls for safety improvements for young pedestrians in south Auckland

More children are reportedly walking in the area prompting concerns about their safety.

The Papakura local board has called on Auckland Transport to investigate improving conditions near Pulman Park and neighbouring Kauri Flats School, a new school boasting nearly 300 students.

Board chair Brent Catchpole said there are a number of areas where driver behaviour is not as good as it should be, and that’s particularly concerning near major parks and schools.

Many people will tell you speeding is common, he said.

"Children are among our most vulnerable community members and they are entitled to our protection.

“If that means we have to get the police there to enforce things, and ask Auckland Transport to put in more permanent measures, we can’t shy away from that.”

The board has asked the agency to develop a concept plan for Walters Rd addressing health and safety issues for people, particularly children, trying to cross the road.

The board petitioned for a pedestrian crossing on Walters Rd outside Kauri Flats School and a 40kmh school zone speed limit.

It requested a slip road outside the athletic throwing net at Pulman Park, aligning crossing points with park entrances, creating defined twin lane exits at all points from the park, and urged AT to ensure all stakeholders are involved in any plan.

Papakura was not the only area of concern.

The board has also asked Auckland Transport to lower speed limits between Hingaia Bridge and the motorway, and at Harbourside Drive and its side roads due to increased housing development in the area.

Step back in time 70 million years in Manurewa, south Auckland, to an age when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Meet Toru, the life-size Triceratops, plus Rexy and Diablo the two-legged meat-eating dinosaurs, plus cute baby dinosaurs and 'Big Herb' the plant-eating titanosaur at the Auckland Botanic Gardens this month.

The DinoFest show runs until January 17 with free entry for children aged under two years.

The family friendly event features a dinosaur encounter, children's activities and a dinosaur trail with a life-size T-Rex.

A special guest dinosaur will make her debut.

You can learn about the prehistoric ferns, cycads and conifer trees whose descendants still grow in the gardens today.
