Congratulations to Andrea Martinisi as he is awarded New Zealand Sommelier of the Year 2021.

Andrea Martinisi is presented with the New Zealand Sommelier of the Year 2021 trophy by Marek Przyborek (NZ Sommelier of the Year 2018) and chair of the Examination Committee with Celia Hay, chair of New Zealand Sommeliers and Wine Professionals Association. Andrea is General Manager and Head Sommelier of The Grove Restaurant, Auckland. Marek is head sommelier at Amisfield, Central Otago.

The day started with the Theory Assessment (60 minutest) and Blind Tasting of 2 wines. The white wine was Saint Clair Pioneer Block Gewurztraminer 2020 from Marlborough and from Spain, Muga Seleccion Especial Rioja 2016. The Practical included a restaurant scenario to decant a bottle of Te Mata Awatea 2018 and provide a food pairing. This was made a little tricky as we also had a bottle Te Mata Awatea 2019 on the sideboard... to check if the candidates were reading the label!

The Practical also featured a spirit tasting where candidates were asked to identify 4 spirits. This year the spirits were Bacardi, Tequila Blanco, Jack Daniels, Calvados.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

IS THIS 'DANCING IN THE DARK'?
The hall lights are turned off but this is not about dancing in complete blinding darkness. There is a wee disco light for a nice moody feel and to help you see where you're going.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC CAN I EXPECT?
We’ll be dancing to electronic dance music with hits from 80s, 90s, 00s and today. Chart-toppers, floor-bangers, remixes, mashups, house, synthpop, techno, Euro-disco, dance-pop, some pop & rock, the occasional touch of latin, and much more for a groovy concoction. There won't be any ballroom, waltz, tango and that type of 'traditional' music.

IS THERE A CHOREOGRAPHY TO LEARN?
No, this is just one hour when you can dance however you like. There is no instructor and you don't need a dance partner. Feel free to bring friends along though!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR & BRING?
Wear anything you feel comfortable in, be it jeans or trackpants, but no high heels please. Bring a water bottle And a few friends if you like 😉 Do not bring valuables, or keep them 'on' or beside you.

CAN I BRING MY KIDS ALONG?
Sure, but they have to be under your supervision at all times and be able to adhere to social distancing. Also worth noting is that a lot of care is taken to keep the music lyrics ‘clean', but there may be the odd unintentional missed word here or there, or mature themes.

DOES IT COST TO GET IN?
This event is FREE to attend – thanks to Howick Local Board and MECOSS, Manukau East Council of Social Services!

CAN I REQUEST A SONG?
Each session has been prerecorded and there is no DJ, so you cannot request a song on the night, but feel free to share your favourites on the DYH Facebook page (see address further below). You never know – there may be new playlists with yours on it!

COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS
We encourage you to use the Covid-19 tracing app on arrival in addition to the usual headcount log. We also ask you to respect other dancers' social space. Government's COVID-19 advice may change from time to time, so do keep up-to-date by following public announcements. Please note: due to the continuing unpredictable nature of Covid-19 situation and the vast number of groups using the hall, the venue owner may take a more cautious approach without prior notice. We will of course try to get the word out immediately if any sessions are cancelled, but this may not always be possible if things happen quickly, and especially newspaper community notices may not be able to be retracted in time.

Our beloved Macaw Parrot did escape from it's cage and on the run. Please let us know if someone sees it around in Pakuranga area around Lagoon Drive towards and around Pakuranga Plaza.
Spotted it few times on few trees around Millen Ave, Latham Ave and few other streets opposite the Mall. It must be exhausted now as haven't had any food for 3 days and getting attacked by Seagulls. Please give us a ring or txt on 0272661115 if someone hear or see it.

Due to other opportunities, I am selling.
This would be an ideal purchase for Mums with Bubs or a semi retired individual as you can choose your own hours and you decide when and where it's stocked.
It is cost effective to own as the operating fees are low and with a little effort, you can earn well!
It's also a great way of supporting local businesses and promoting charity events in East Auckland.
The catchment area is greater East Auckland and would sustain two editions.

Dear neighbours,

Please meet Alyce Read of Nelson, who uses her houseplant collection to connect with others and help them overcome mental health challenges. "You wouldn’t take a plant and put it in a dark corner and fail to water it and expect it to thrive. So we should look at ourselves that way," she says. "If we are not thriving in the way that we would wish, it might not be any fault of ours, it might be the conditions that we are under."

All it takes is a kind gesture to change someone’s day. From giving flowers to a neighbour ‘just because’ to paying it forward in line at a cafe - this month we’re encouraging our members and supporters to make New Zealand a better place one random act of kindness at a time.

The options for doing so are endless! Being kind doesn’t have to cost a thing, after all a smile is free. For those who want to go the extra mile, here’s some other ideas: take a gift over to new neighbours and introduce yourself, build a free community library for your street, buy extra kai at the grocery store to donate to a food bank, bring treats into work for colleagues, send an encouraging text to someone who needs it, let a car into the traffic ahead of you, write positive messages in chalk on sidewalks around your neighbourhood, or surprise loved ones with a visit.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re spreading kindness this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to:

Oceania has always believed in better and so does Meadowbank’s new Care Manager, Suzette Vorster.

Having worked in Aged Care for several years, Suzette’s favourite thing about her work has remained the same – giving back to those who’ve done so much for Aotearoa.

“Our residents have a lifetime of knowledge and have worked hard in often difficult times. I see it as such a privilege to be in a position to lead a team of people who are passionate about caring for them.”

Suzette’s recipe for great care is simple. “Great care means meeting a resident’s daily needs with empathy and warmth – to deliver the kind of care that anyone would want their Mum or Dad to have.”

She’s excited to take on a new challenge in our vibrant village beside Orakei Basin.

“Meadowbank is a beautiful site– it’s a place anyone would feel proud to live in and a place families enjoy visiting. Our Care Suites provide a feeling of independence within the comfort and security of exceptional 24/7, round-the-clock care.” And her vision for Meadowbank goes beyond brick and mortar.

“The heart of it is the people – staff who provide empathy and love, and residents who live their years to the fullest.”

To learn more about our Care Suites with Rest Home and Hospital level care, get in touch with Suzette today.
