Special times ahead on earlier She'll Be Right Show, on East FM
Odds & Ends are a highly-skilled and accomplished Auckland pop-rock band on the rise and its frontman Koen Aldershof is special guest on this Saturday’s She’ll Be Right Show with PJ Taylor, from midday to 4pm (NZ time), April 9, on East FM. Earlier broadcast this week!
Koen will be live in the East FM studio at 2pm to talk about Odds & Ends, their dynamic new single Something Else – out last Friday – and their excitement for an upcoming special-treat gig at The Tuning Fork – downtown – on Saturday, April 23, with support from Flaxxies, Borderline and Coast Arcade.
Indie-rock, alt-pop Odds & Ends have excellent songs with diversity in styles and sounds, with their top-class playing accentuated by superb quality production.
“I found the drum recording we did back in 2018 with Paddy Hill at Roundhead Studios, and thought, ‘shit, these sound pretty good!’” says Koen, also recording engineer.
“Building the rest of the track around these killer sounding drums was almost easy. Something Else might be our favourite song to play live, so we know it inside out. Recording every little detail felt so natural and was a ton of fun.”
All the parts were recorded in various studios and home studios around Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Then the band mixed and mastered the single and got it ready for release.
“It’s pretty awesome to see we can record, mix and master it all ourselves,” says bass player and mix engineer Jonathan Meyer.
“There are so many different layers and sounds that make up the whole song. This one is full of ear candy.”
Drummer and master engineer Max Earnshaw says: “With the pandemic, everyone’s gotten used to working from home. It felt super easy sending different versions and files across to the band. It really felt like we were in the same room, listening to the same thing and finishing the song together.”
The last Odds & Ends’ single, Picture, out in August last year, debuted at 8 in the Top 20 NZ singles chart and 37 on the Top 40 singles chart.

The Reserve Bank has shared some pretty blunt advice: there’s no such thing as a “safe” job anymore 🛟😑
Robots are stepping into repetitive roles in factories, plants and warehouses. AI is taking care of the admin tasks that once filled many mid-level office jobs.
