Police have impounded eight dirt bikes after a spate of dangerous driving in Manukau and Bucklands Beach.

Counties Manukau police have issued a warning to dirt bike riders to exercise caution after three separate incidents.

Three dirt bikes and two road bikes were seized on Sunday after people reported a group of riders hitting Musick Point in Bucklands Beach.

When police arrived on the scene, some riders dumped their bikes in the bushes and fled on foot.

Officers found five bikes, one of them stolen, with the help of from Howick Golf Course players and members of the community.

A young person was stopped at the scene and police enquiries are ongoing to identify the other bikers.

On Friday, police confiscated a quad bike after it was seen ripping up turf at Walter Massey Park.

The incident was reported to the council and more action is likely, police said.

On February 16, a quad bike rider without a helmet was injured after he crashed in Yates Rd, Mangere.

Police found a man with significant injuries being treated by ambulance staff at a house nearby.

Officers impounded two bikes from the address and said charges are likely.

People have reported dirt bikers getting injured after crashing into cars in Otara and Mangere Bridge in the past week.

During one incident, a male cyclist without a helmet drove through a red light in Otara and smashed into another vehicle, police said.

He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to hospital.

Counties Manukau policing manager inspector Kay Lane said it is only a matter of time before one of the riders is killed.

“In general these dirt bike riders show little regard for their own safety or the safety of those around them on the roads," Lane said.

“We are continuing to see riders put themselves and other motorists in significant danger by driving recklessly, carrying out dangerous stunts and failing to wear helmets.

Police are appealing to the bikers to stop putting themselves and other road users at risk.

"It may seem like fun until one of your mates is seriously hurt," said Lane.

It is illegal to ride a dirt bike on the road unless it is roadworthy with a current warrant and registration, police said.

Anyone riding a bike with an engine capacity above 50cc must have a motorbike licence.

Police are calling on parents and family members to make sure the bikers, some of them youths, are driving safely and wearing helmets.

“The last thing we want is to have to knock on your door and tell you that your loved one has been killed or seriously injured in a crash," Lane said.

Investigations are continuing into the Waitangi Day mass cavalcade of 170 bikes as officers review CCTV footage.

If you have footage of dirt bike riders driving dangerously, you can upload it here: dirtbike.nzpolice.org...

You can also phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

When New Zealand’s Alert Level 4 came into effect in March 2020, schools around the country faced the challenge of a transitioning from onsite to online learning.

As students adjusted to the shift in their educational environment, many schools were ill-prepared to move to quickly to online learning. Schools such as St Peter’s in Cambridge were readily prepared for a seamless transfer between classroom and digital learning.

With each student ready to use online platforms such as Google Classroom and Hangouts, a streamlined shift was enabled as soon as the lockdown occurred.

Find out why more families are choosing St Peter’s at our Open Day on 12 March.

Because they are the same profile you can use then all in one area just adjust the amount of base you use to take up the different thickness. If you need the full 11.6mSq then you can use the grey ones to make a path or dot them at random for interest. There is also a small stack if sand and some base course/rubble you can have too.

Benefits of Shopping

These older individuals are integrated, interactive participants in their communities, which in turn contributes to their wellbeing overall.

However, being active does not necessarily mean seniors need a full schedule of planned activities. Studies indicate engaging in daily life activities can have far-reaching benefits. Shopping, for example, is a daily life activity that can stimulate cognitive processes, provide physical benefits, and function as a leisure pursuit that promotes social engagement. This simple, daily activity may be a strong factor in quality of life for seniors who may not be as active or physically well as their counterparts.

Since shopping is an common activity, most people do not consider the cognitive processes involved in making everyday purchases. Shoppers must identify items needed, determine where the items can be obtained, evaluate and compare before and after purchase, and determine value as compared to cost. While engaging in these processes can sometimes be attributed to buying habits, seniors who regularly shop are stimulating the areas of the brain involved in the decision-making process.

The physical benefits are notable as well. Older adults who shop regularly may actually live longer than those who do not. One study of more than 1800 individuals aged 65 or over showed that participants who shopped every day, particularly men, had a 27% lower risk of death than those who did not. Researchers reason that it is possible that the physical activity (walking) involved in shopping, the opportunity for these older individuals to buy food and make buying decisions that positively affected good diet and health, and the social interaction may be key components of this decrease risk.

This last component, social interaction, is one that may affect life span because it affects life quality. Some studies of social engagement related to longevity show that older adults who are more socially engaged had 50% increased chance of living longer than those who were more isolated. The shopping experience can add to social engagement by allowing the older adult to meet and interact new people during the outing as well as using the outing as a social experience with friends and family.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of shopping as a life-enriching activity is that it can be enjoyed by most older adults, even those who may have health problems. With a little help from family, friends, or even caregivers when required, seniors with mobility or transportation challenges can experience the cognitive, health, and social benefits a day on the town can provide.
