Pupils from Papakura Normal School have appealed to the local board to fix an open drain along Walters Rd, which neighbours their school.

Kaige Chase, Gabriel Moaate-Minhinnick, Olivia Kim, Genesis Blakelock and Angelina Tuiono asked the board to take their concerns to Auckland Transport after incidents involving children walking to school.

"We realise this is probably about money but saving money in the old days has just stored up problems for today," they said.

The students told the board a six-year-old boy fell into the drain.

Another boy failed in his attempts to rescue him.

But a motorist intervened and pulled him to safety.

In another incident, a driver leaving the carpark opposite drove into the drain.

“The incident with the boys led to temporary fixes that involved some orange plastic fencing, but it just seems to have become a permanent solution," the students said.

"Now it is breaking down and probably ending up polluting our sea.”

The drain had become overgrown, with the school spending money battling gorse and weeds and building a large fence to keep students safe, they said.

The pupils urged the board to infill the drain to create more parking and drop-off zones.

Board chair Brent Catchpole said he was impressed with the amount of research that went into their deputation.

"These young people did not just come along to complain," he said.

"They gathered evidence, thought about the problem and even outlined possible solutions."

The board will refer the matter to Auckland Transport and Healthy Waters, asking for a quick response, he said.

A company which dumped scrap metal in South Auckland without resource consent has been ordered by Auckland Council to clean up its act.

Compliance officers have issued two abatement notices stopping the firm from importing the material to 30 Great South Rd Takanini and ordering removal of the metal.

Officers were acting on a complaint made at the end of April that a large pile of scrap had been dumped.

The land was being leased and the scrap stored there temporarily, while the company cleaned its main site in Onehunga.

Auckland Council’s GM Licensing and Regulatory Services James Hassall said the company had until June 10 to comply with the abatement notices.

“If they fail to comply, the council would consider taking further action including prosecution under the Resource Management Act, which carries a maximum penalty of $600,000 for a company,” he said.

Residents who see dumped rubbish are urged to call 0800 NO DUMP (0800 66 3867) or email inthebin@aklc.govt.nz

An initiative to restore and protect Papakura stream is being rolled out by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and Mondelez New Zealand.

The Papakura Stream Restoration Project will be launched at Brookby Wildlife Habitat on May 26.

The project will kick off with the planting of 12,500 trees and the installation of nearly 400 metres of Future Post fencing, made from recycled soft plastics.

The project aims to boost conservation and teach people about recyling soft plastics.

The initiative will restore and protect five kilometres of the waterway over the next three years and habitat for such native species as the longfin eel, tui and the long-tailed bat.

Most of the stream's original habitat has been lost to agriculture, industry and urban development due to wetland draining.

This has led to a massive reduction in forest cover and water quality, reducing habitats for native species and increasing pollution of the waterway.

Venluree’s Roman Blind range utilises curtain fabrics and lining from our extensive curtain range.

Some of us set up our homes in a way to make them look clean and tidy at all times. This basically depends upon the colours you choose for your furniture. One thing which is very important is what curtains you choose to create your desired vibe.

Honestly, curtains and blinds have the ability to make your look come together. For such homes, Roman Blinds are an excellent option. Another very interesting fact about these is that they are not like basic blinds they look like both curtains and blinds which give your homes a very clean and tidy look altogether.

For blinds, curtains, shutters and awning enquiries please call our friendly team on 0800 501 841 or email sales@venluree.co.nz
