Climate and congestion at forefront as Government funds Ashburton rail hub
A Government cash injection means the last hurdle has been cleared for a new Mid-Canterbury rail hub, and it could slash emissions by lowering truck movements by about 40,000 a year.
In an announcement on Saturday morning, Transport Minister Michael Wood said Government would invest the last $2 million needed for Ashburton’s $14 million Fairfield Freight Hub project.
The project, a joint initiative between the Ashburton District Council, the Wareing Group, and KiwiRail, meant KiwiRail could move its historic rail container terminal in the middle of town to the Fairton industrial area.
KiwiRail Group chief executive Greg Miller said this was a great collaboration for rural New Zealand. Read more here.
