Hurunui by-election results announced
Mary Holloway will be the Hurunui District’s newest councillor following a by-election for the West Ward.
Voting closed on Friday Aug 14 and Holloway came in top with 778 votes over Jeffrey Walker's 397.
The vacancy in the West Ward – which covers western Hurunui including Waikari, Culverden, Waiau and Hanmer Springs – was created when Cr Jason Fletcher resigned amid revelations he was investigated over a prank with a knife.
Holloway said she was “humbled and grateful” to be able to serve her community.
"I am North Canterbury born and bred and aware of the district’s rural and farming needs,” she said in a statement.
A by-election will now be held to replace the extraordinary vacancy on the Hanmer Springs Community Board created by Holloway’s new position.

Poll: Would you take a 1.5-hour hike for a shop? 🌿🐦
Canterbury, you have a hidden treasure right on your doorstep ... though it does come with a 1.5-hour walk up the stunning Rakaia Gorge Walkway.
Along the trail you’ll find The Fantail Shop showcasing small artworks by local artisans. Even better, every purchase supports the Fantail Trust, helping protect and restore biodiversity on the north bank of the gorge.
So we’re curious: would you take a 1.5-hour hike for a shop? (And for local biodiversity, of course 🌿)
