Rangiora's Saints Functional Fitness team banding together to help one of their own.

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

Regular gym member Karl Battersby's wife Kylie has been battling breast cancer for seven years and has now been told it is terminal. The couple have three daughters - 12, 11 and 9 - who all attend Fernside School.

To help the family out, Saints is holding the largest functional fitness team challenge event they believe has ever been held in North Canterbury. Teams will have to complete 15 unique fitness/team building problem solving stations and gather points to win. All fitness levels are welcome, with the competition aimed more at fun and charity.

The Saints team is aiming to fill 15 teams of 10 people. All team members must make a donation to gain entry to the event, with all proceeds going to the Battersby family.

A large family-style barbecue and drinks will be provided to participants and supporters after the event, which kicks off at 10am on Sunday, October 20.

Saints owners Ash and Aaron McConville say Karl Battersby is a "consistent member" of the gym who goes to the 5am class every day.

"We truly do have a ridiculously unique close community, so putting an event together like this was easy," Aaron McConville says.

The team has already raised $7000 for the Battersby family. They do not have a target in mind, but have asked the wider public to "throw in whatever they can".
