Hanmer Springs town centre first in NZ to become smoke and vapefree
Residents and tourists in Hanmer Springs are being encouraged to give the gift of fresh air this Valentines Day, with the launch of a six-month trial adding to the town's existing smokefree zones.
The trial, starting on Thursday (February 14), is a joint initiative by the Cancer Society, the Canterbury District Health Board and the Hanmer Springs Community Board, with support from the Hurunui District Council.
Cancer Society health promotion adviser Cheryl Ford says people are already asked not to smoke in the town's parks, playgrounds and reserves.
The trial will add to that initiative by encouraging people to keep key public spaces such as the main street, Amuri Ave and Conical Hill Rd both smokefree and vapefree.
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
