Gareth and Laura Caldwell became owner-operators of the New World supermarket in Kaiapoi two months ago, and said they wanted to support the community.
“We recognise how challenging the cost of living is for people right now. When Laura and I heard that requests for food parcels at the Kaiapoi Food Bank had more than doubled in the last year, we were very keen to lend our support to their fundraising appeal," Gareth Caldwell said.
Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust manager Deirdre Ryan said the Caldwells' support could not have come at a better time.
"Parents are doing their very best to care for their children, but they can’t make ends meet.
"They’re being squeezed by the cost of food, fuel, rent, electricity and lack of affordable housing."
Cost of living increases also meant funds to buy food for the food bank were not going as far as they used to.
"Demand for food parcels always rises in the lead-up to Christmas, but it’s so high already," Ryan said.
"I’m really concerned about how we’re going to keep up. That’s why I created this fundraising appeal."
"Every dollar donated to our Appeal becomes $2 when it’s matched by New World Kaiapoi, meaning twice the number of children in our community will be saved from hunger."
Before taking ownership of New World Kaiapoi, the Caldwells owned and operated Raeward Fresh in Richmond, near Nelson.
"New World Kaiapoi is a community-based store, in the heart of a wonderful, tight-knit community ... that really appealed to us and was a big part of our decision to move here," Laura Caldwell said.
Donations to the Kaiapoi Food Bank Appeal can be made online at www.wellbeingnc.org.nz...
Any amount donated will be matched by New World Kaiapoi until the appeal raises $2500.

Commissioners will consider the fate of a housing development in Amberley.
The Hurunui District Council’s strategy and policy committee voted last week to appoint two independent commissioners to consider submissions for a resource consent application for stages three to six in The Clearing subdivision.
The Clearing subdivision, located between Amberley Beach and Carters roads, has 123 sections established in the first two stages.
The application proposed creating a further 201 sections ranging in size from 400m2 to 1028m2, with the vast majority below 700m2.
But the Hurunui District Plan allowed for just 20 percent of sections to be smaller than 700m2 for residential 1A zone.
Other variations to the District Plan, included several sections not meeting the 15m by 15m shape factor requirement, non-compliance with the minimum 20m road width and a lack of provision of footpaths on both sides of the roads.
Mayor Marie Black said she favoured appointing two independent commissioners due to the extent of the non-compliance and the importance to the community.
■ Hurunui councillors have also hailed the success of an initiative to improve the use of rural property numbering.
Council staff joined joined forces with Culverden Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Craig Ritchie last year to improve the visibility and accuracy of RAPID (rural address property identification) numbering in the Amuri Basin.
Audits have been completed on 70 dairy farms, the council has approved the naming of rights-of-way, and 576 property owners have purchased RAPID numbers from RTL Ltd. The council hoped to roll the initiative out over other parts of the district.
■ Council staff have sought clarity on how to dispose of land which is not for sale.
Councillors adopted a draft Disposal of Property Policy, which includes a section on council property which is not for sale, at last week’s strategy and policy committee meeting.
Chief operations officer Dan Harris said the council had a range of options to dispose of property which was surplus to requirements.
These included repurposing the property for another purpose, gifting property which was no longer financially beneficial to the council, selling the property, or demolition.
‘‘Challenges had arisen around the distribution of the proceeds from the sale of property, and last year it was first determined that a policy review would help address this issue,’’ Harris said.

North Canterbury’s mayors are keen for more discussions on passenger rail.
The issue of passenger rail was discussed at a Canterbury Regional Transport Committee meeting last week, as the region’s mayors considered the Government’s enquiry into the future of inter-regional passenger rail.
Light rail has long been touted to meet a growing commuter transport demand in the Greater Christchurch area, to ease congestion and reduce transport emissions.
Meanwhile, the Coastal Pacific rail service is set to make a return on September 29, after two years of Covid-19 disruption.
Hurunui mayor Marie Black said she would welcome a Greater Christchurch light rail service being extended to Amberley and Waipara.
‘‘We struggle to have a public bus system due to our low population, so we would like to be considered - but it’s got to stack up financially.’’
The benefits of taking the train instead of the car for the 40 minute journey into Christchurch included catching up on work, checking emails or reading a book, as well as the environmental benefits.
But Black said it would take a change in mindset.
Kaikōura was well outside the area being considered for a Greater Christchurch light rail service.
But mayor Craig Mackle said there were potential benefits for the tourist town from a more regular rail service.
He welcomed the return of the Coastal Pacific service and he said the popularity of chartered trains for the Kaikoura Cup race day showed what was possible.
‘‘It’s a hard one, because there is the risk it would be sitting dormant most of the time, but people love coming to Kaikōura and who doesn’t enjoy a good train ride.’’
Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon has long been a fan of trains and buses and was a regular user of the park and ride express bus from Rangiora for meetings in the city.
He said there was support for subsidised inter-city passenger and on-demand services, affordable electric vehicles and financial incentives to work from home, to help reduce emissions.
North Canterbury-based Labour List MP Dan Rosewarne sits on Parliament’s transport and infrastructure committee and said a Greater Christchurch light rail service would bring benefits to the region.
He envisaged a service linking central Christchurch with Amberley, Rangiora and Kaiapoi in the north and travelling as far south as Ashburton.
‘‘They always talk about rail in Wellington, but it’s important to get Canterbury and North Canterbury moving too.
‘‘Once that stadium is built, alongside the convention centre and the rest of the central city is rebuilt, it will be like another Wellington.’’
Submissions for the Government’s inter-regional passenger rail enquiry close on October 6.
