Speed limits are also changing in Akaroa, dropping to 40kmh in most of the town's roads.
“Akaroa is attracting increasing numbers of daytrippers and holidaymakers so we want to keep vehicle speeds down for safety reasons,’’ Christchurch City Council Transport operations manager Steffan Thomas said.
The new limits come into effect on October 22.
Other speed limit changes include:
- Purau-Port Levy Road reduced from 100kmh to 60kmh, and to 40kmh in the Port Levy settlement.
- Port Levy-Pigeon Bay Road reduced from 100kmh to 60kmh, with speeds of 60kmh or 40kmh within Pigeon Bay.
- Kukupa, near Pigeon Bay, will have a speed reduction from 100kmh to 40kmh.
- Birdlings Flat, Kaitorete Spit, Little River and Okuti Valley will have speed limits of either 60kmh or 40kmh depending on the specific road.
- The Western Valley route, Puaha Valley and Southern Bays roads will reduce from 100kmh to 60kmh.
- In Charteris Bay a 600-metre section of Marine Drive will be lowered from 60kmh to 50kmh.
- In Diamond Harbour a section of Waipapa Ave will be lowered to 30kmh.
Next year, a 40kmh speed limit will be introduced on all streets in Lyttelton, except Norwich Quay/Gladstone Quay, which is part of State Highway 74 and is the responsibility of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
