Every night Gary Bridgman’s Christchurch home is lit up like a sports stadium.
The Fendalton resident blames new LED streetlights installed on the street outside, and says complaints to the city council about an “unbelievable” glare coming through his windows have gone unresolved for weeks.
The two lights either side of the house produce a whiter light than their predecessors, Bridgman says, causing the house to be “lit up like it’s floodlit” at night. He has seen other LED streetlights in his area that are “very good”.
Council says the complaints are being investigated and the contractor has been asked to provide a solution.

Calls are being made for the popular Canterbury holiday hotspot to be excluded from a three-tiered consenting system, which will compel those who rent out a property on a short-term basis to apply for a consent, at a cost of least $1000.
The changes are being proposed by the city council after a proliferation of homes have been listed on short-term accommodation websites in Christchurch in the past four years, causing concerns about the impact on housing supply and the loss of residential neighbours.
The motel industry has also put pressure on the council to create a level playing field.
But some argue the issues faced in Christchurch are not problems for Banks Peninsula.

Wonderland - the 1906 equivalent of a theme park - was set up in Christchurch's Hagley Park during the New Zealand International Exhibition.
It included a "most riotous" water chute, which sent people hurtling into Victoria Lake on a small boat.

At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.
Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.
Why does my MP matter?
The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.
