First Day of the Season and what a Stunner for the Baker Eady Trophy!!

This was all spiced up with typical Haven Humour, and, as is the nature of the sport, some surprising results – some good and some less good!
The Trophy, provided by Julie Baker & Gwen Eady, both past members and officers of the Club, is traditionally the first of our competitions and is a played in a format which gives each team member an opportunity to play in all positions throughout the course of the day.

Considering it was the first time in use, our refurbished green rapidly improved during the morning with a combination of bright sunshine and the passage of players to and fro, so by the afternoon it was very playable. We look forward further matches on what will no doubt rapidly become an excellent surface.

The final result also reflected the trueness of the green in that the two top teams were separated by only by one end over the four games played. The Runners-Up were Gary Glenn and Brian Nolan skipped by Roy Parker and the 2020 Trophy holders are Gloria Markovina and Richard Vernal skipped by Club Captain, Ian Little.

In the true Haven tradition, the afternoon was capped off by an hour or two relaxing in the sunshine celebrating bowling being the overall winner. What a great day!!

If you would like to sample the Haven Hospitality, we have an Open Afternoon for new players next Saturday, 24th October, starting at 1pm - absolute beginners welcome.

Quiz Night on Friday 19th was our first major event following the COVID upheavals and turned out to be a major success with the largest turnout we have ever had to such an event. Over eighty participants braved the chilly evening to make the event a highly enjoyable one for all concerned.

Our Quiz Master, Dave Hilson, very ably presided over the evening in great style considerable patience and good humour despite the usual Beach Haven banter and the odd challenge to answers. Thanks Dave, you did a wonderful job.

Our sincere thanks also go to all participants for supporting the Club, especially the large group based on the Ray White, Beach Haven Office who also donated the Auction Prize. As in all contests there are winners and losers and also those who came oh, so close. One such team, “I Knew That!” did not quite know enough but pushed the eventual winners very hard to finish just three points behind “Bowled Over” who took out the top prize.

Watch this space for details of our next Social event planned for July.

Cowley-Holmes Memorial Cup & Trophy

Yet another fine Saturday on which to enjoy our sport and also remember two much loved Club Members who both contributed their DNA in the culture of The Mighty Haven.

Ian Cowley, President 2004/08 bought the word “Fun” to our bowls lexicon in a big way, and would have thoroughly enjoyed Saturday’s proceedings in Team “Colours” complete with the banter that goes with such an event.

Stuart Holmes (1972-2011), or “Stu” as he was known by us all, was a talented sportsman who played hard, but played fair and was always the first to hand out bouquets (or brickbats) to friends or foe alike. He was also a great champion to new players to our sport. A very likeable burst of sunshine at all times, regardless of the situation and sadly taken far too early in life.

These two events are usually played separately, but as our programme has been telescoped by several events beyond our control, it was thought appropriate to play them concurrently, with the result that both Trophies were awarded on the day.

We witnessed some excellent play on our rapidly improving green and the results clearly reflected how close the overall scores were. The Runners-Up in the Ian Cowley Cup were The Pirates (Jimmy Dunn and Richard & Eileen Ponting) with the winners being The Mighty Guerillas (Richard Vernall and Dan & Rick Markovina). This raised the question, “How many more times are you going to finish Second, Mr President?”. Unfortunately and for reasons of good taste, your scribe cannot publish the President’s response.

The new holders of the Stu Holmes Memorial Trophy are the highest ranked team with a non-registered player and this year it was in the form of The Scarfies, (Doug Laughlan, Bill Briton, Gloria Markovina & Anne Woulfe. After some negotiation, they were dissuaded from burning the Club's one and only sofa in celebration!

Well played to all participants, it was a great event and lived up to all the history behind it.

How much longer will this glorious season last?!! The only difference between this week and the superb conditions we had last weekend was that there was NO WIND AT ALL and the Green was playing even better – Morris Pita, you are A STAR!!!

Two concurrent Pairs competitions were played, the Blows Lapel Pins for Leads and Twos, and the Pattendon Trophy for Threes and Skips. Both these trophies were donated by past Members of the Club and are regular milestones in our annual calendar.
This years’s celebration drew a good turnout despite some members being on Centre Event duties and whilst the competition produced some excellent bowling skills, the atmosphere was of a distinctly Haven nature, with plenty of banter and humour.

The competition on the Green was followed by an hour or two of good fellowship where the bowls ran even better with every re-telling of the matches played. An eavesdropper could be forgiven for assuming we had exponents of international standard on the day. We are good, but not that good!!!

Both Competitions produced some close finishes so we had two “Ahhhh” teams to console with the usual comments and these were Garry Glenn & Doug Laughlan in the Blows Pins and John Everett & Richard Ponting in the Pattendon (Second again, Ponting – not good enough!). Zelda Sullivan and Sandra Hilson took out the Blows Pins title with Jimmy Dunn & Dan Markovina taking the Pattendon Trophy Honours with three wins out of three games.

Just another great day at The Haven.

CLL Tournament A Huge Success

The weather continued to be kind, a full green of eight rinks were filled by players from five visiting Clubs (including two teams from Thames BC) and it took some high quality bowling to be placed in the winner's circle. These important ingredients were spiced with good fellowship and more than a little sprinkling of that very special brand of humour associated with bowlers and bowling. What a great day!

Our Podium teams reflected the now very apparent trend that bowling is becoming a younger person's game. Without wishing to give away sensitive information, the three top teams were placed in what is probably the reverse order of their average ages. This is great news for the Club and most of all for the sport, which is now clearly not the sole domain of our more senior citizens.

For the record, third place went to Roy Parker, Sandy Cleghorn and Gary Wallace, second were Garry Banks, David Payne and Neil Buckner, and our winners were Jason Blackmore, Karl Glenn and Gareth Towler. Well done “The Young Guns”, it was a magnificent win.

The Club's sincere thanks go to Terry Donnelly at CLL for their support for the day and also to the BHBC members who put in the time required to publicize the Event or turned out in a support role to run the club facilities during the day. None of the above would have happened without you.
