Pianist Nikolai Saratovsky plays in Mulled Wine Concerts
Nikolai Saratovsky is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, enjoying a stellar career. He has already won a number of major international piano competitions and has an extraordinary repertoire, ranging from Bach to the latest contemporary composers. As well as performing on the concert circuit in Europe and Asia, he is a noted academic occupying a senior position in one of the largest music schools in Asia, in Taiwan.
Mulled Wine Concerts, will present a piano recital by Nikolai Saratovsky
at 2:30PM on SUNDAY 25 June 2023 at the Memorial Hall in Paekakariki and in Anzac Hall in Featherston on FRIDAY JUNE 23 at7.30pm.
Organiser Mary Gow, a concert pianist herself, tells the story of how she met Saratovsky at his recital in Brussels and mentioned that she came from New Zealand. "His eyes lit up and told me that he and his Japanese-born wife had always dreamed of visiting New Zealand! From there, it was a short step to discussing possibilities - I arranged a concert tour for him in 2018 and he had such a good reception, he wanted to return – this he did in 2019 and NZ audiences raved". And then, of course came Covid, the shut-down of international travel and the cancellation of concerts everywhere. So it is only now in 2023 that we will have the opportunity of hearing him once more.
Saratovsky studied at the Moscow State Conservatory graduating with the Award for Academic Excellence and a Master's degree, and has gone on to win numerous awards for his musical accomplishments. He regularly gives master classes in Japan, Russia,The USA, Canada, Luxembourg and Taiwan. Since his last visit to New Zealand he has done concert tours in England, Korea, Japan and Africa.
Mary Gow feels that his visit to New Zealand represents a wonderful opportunity for Kapiti and Wairarapa audiences to catch a star during his brief visit to New Zealand. "The Mulled Wine Concert Series always tries to bring audiences the sort of artists that discerning audiences will appreciate and we are very lucky that this year he has again managed to fit us into his schedule. To see a pianist of this quality and fire is an opportunity not to be missed".
Nikolai Saratovsky will present a recital of works including Schubert Impromptus, “Spanish Rhapsody” by Liszt, and works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Tchaikowsky and Shostakovich and others.

January's Weather: Summer III
Along with most places in Central New Zealand, January 2026 in Kāpiti was its third summer month ⎯ the first half of which was sunny and dry, while the second, particularly the third week, had more cloud and produced most of the month’s rain. However, along with the lower west coast of the Motu, it again avoided the extreme rain storms of north-eastern regions
Temperatures: Our daily average maximum temperature was 21.9℃, over a degree cooler than average, being the lowest in over 10 years, but only three points below the also cooler January 2025. However, we were again the warmest place in central NZ with an overall mean temperature of 17.4℃, despite some eastern areas with maximums frequently a couple degrees higher than ours.
Maximums of over 20 degrees in Kāpiti occurred on 27 days.
Sunshine: The equivalent of 18 fine days was average for January, with the sunny first half of the month and last week, supporting the third cloudy/wet one.
Rainfall: Rainfall of around 95mm, was almost double the historic average for January and the highest for nine years, however, almost 70 percent of this fell in just over 12 hours as one event at the beginning of the third week. Despite this the rain was not sufficient to prevent dry conditions prevailing for most of the month.
February’s Outlook: Records show Kāpiti’s weather for February is virtually the same as January’s with an average temperature of 23℃ and 18 sunny days, so February this year might have a bit of catching-up.
