Introducing Beverley Dowling, our cat expert! đ»
Beverley is an Animal Compliance Education Officer who works through Armourguard to help people get their cats desexed, microchipped and saved on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register.
đ In WhangÄrei, all cats must be desexed and microchipped by six months of age. This change was introduced on 1 July 2022, and Beverley's job is to help achieve that vision.
âOur dog pound cannot hold cats, so my job is not about trapping and re-homing cats, or about punishing people whose cats are not microchipped or neutered." she says. "Itâs about working with cat owners to help them get the benefits of snipping (neutering) and chipping (microchipping) for their furry friends."
âI also help people get the services they need when they report stray, feral or injured cats to us. It usually means connecting people to local SPCA, vets, and cat protection groups."
Beverley has been very busy since starting last year!

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to âexuberanceâ? đ„
In The Postâs opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, weâre âallergic to exuberance.â
We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?
Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps itâs worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.

Many New Zealand gardens arenât seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days â the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, whoâs made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
