Diamond Harbour Playcentre gifted pou by community

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Diamond Harbour Playcentre has unveiled a new pou that was gifted by the community to the centre on September 15.

Local Wally Hemapo donated an old telephone pole to be used specifically as a pou. He carved a beautiful depiction of a “mother and baby” koru wrapped in a korowai at the top of the pou.

Local artist Rebecca Gibbs painted the pou, with help from tamariki from the centre.

“Rebecca designed a beautiful harakeke to represent our playcentre whānau, with the ocean, mountains, river and land in the background. The centre tamariki filled in background areas with colourful fingerprints,” Olivia Sinclair, Diamond Harbour Playcentre member Olivia Sinclair said.

“Several playcentre whānau were also instrumental in making this project happen."

Playcentre Aotearoa’s kaiwhakahaere hononga Māori (Māori relationship manager) Erana Rattray said it was "wonderful to be able to weave te reo me ōna tikanga Māori throughout the ceremony and for playcentre tamariki and their whānau to experience our rich culture, connecting the centre to the wider community".

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Press investigates the growing reliance on your unpaid labour.

Automation (or the “unpaid shift”) is often described as efficient ... but it tends to benefit employers more than consumers.

We want to know: What do you think about automation?
Are you for, or against?
